MOTETT SOCIETY.

PRESENTATION TO MR H. WELLS.

Last evening the members of the Christ* church Motett Society met at the rooms of the Girls' friendly Society, Gloucester street, when presentations were made to Mr and Mrs Wells.

The chair was occupied by the President, Mr Justice Denoiston, and there was a large attendance.

An apology waa received for the absence of Mr F. S. l&alcolm, Vice-President.

The Hon. Secbitaby (Mr C Hiorns) read the resolutions passed at a former meeting deciding to wind up the Society, and to continue it on a smaller scale under the name of " Mr Wells' Motett Society." The Chairman, in asking the meeting to confirm the resolutions, , expressed his regret that official duties had rendered his position almost an honorary one. He was sorry that the Society in its present form was to be closed up, but all would be pleased that it was to be continued under Mr Wells. He had always enjoyed the music of the Society. He did not know why two societies did not flourish better in Christchurch. One reason he thought was because of the way in which the musical performances were criticised. They did not ask for indiscriminate praise, but they hoped for some sympathy from those who criticised.

Mr Wbuls read a report showing the work done during the year, and the pieces performed during the five years the Society had been in existence.

The Hon. Secretary submitted the balance-sheet for the past year, showing receipts £168 19s lid, and expenditure £161 7s 2d, leaving a credit balance of £7 12s 9d, which had been handed to Mr Wells.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The Chairman then presented their conductor, Mr H. Wells, with a baton on behalf of the performing members, and Mr and Mrs Wells with an overmantel, on behalf of the lady members, as a token of appreciation of his services. Mr Wells suitably responded. The baton was a handsome one of ebony, mounted in silver. In the centre was a plate bearing the inscription:— " Presented to Mr Wells by members of the Chrisechurch Motett Society, August, 1891." It was enclosed in a morocco-covered case, lined with velvet and satin. The gilt lettering on the case was the work of the Pkbss jobbing department. The baton was procured from Messrs Milnerand Thompson's and the over-mantel (a handsome one of walnut) from Messrs A. J. White and Co.

A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Mr Justice Denniston for his services as President of the Society. Several hours were then spent in a social manner, members contributing musical items, and refreshments were provided and handed round by the ladies.
