There is, thinks Mr Richardson, not much chance that the New %*frfand Institute of Surveyors Bill will be passed this session. When there is talk of a Government measure being abandoned it may be assumed that there is a very poor prospect for any private member's Bui, more especially when, as in this case, strong opposition is shown. The Bill passed the Waste Lands Committee by a narrow majority only, and with a clause struck oat providing that the Council shall examine candidates for membership in the institute. There was a good deal of objection to this clause on the part of those who believed that it encroached on the powers of the Surveyor • General, and Mr Richardson allowed it to be struck out rather *b*n l"y the Bill altogether. He and other members have received telegrams from Auckland and other places in support of the BilL
