Allege* Assault.—David Simpson, a Soung man, was charged with assaulting un Watt at his house, near the Sootch Stores, Tuam street, and with breaking a pane of glass, valued at 2s 6d. Mr Stringer appeared for him. There was an interpreter provided by the police. Constablo Ramsay stated that at about 11.30 on the previous night in Tuam street he heard a noise, and on going up saw prisoner kicking at the prosecutor's door, and afterwards he threw something; a noise of glass breaking followed, and the prisoner ran away. Witness caught him, and asked him what ho had been doing. He said he had smashed a window and cut a Chinaman's eye with the glass. Sun Wah stated that the prisoner came into hia house, and on being told to go oat wanted to fight. He was then turned out, when ho kicked at the door and put something through a pane in the door, the glass of which cut witness in the eye. Mr -wringer now said the accused admitted the offence. He was under the influence of drink, and seeing a light in this house he went in. Ho was thrown out at once, and, being angry, kicked at the door to get in again, The glass in it broke and fell on to theOhrr___n who was standing behind it. He had no intention of committing an assault. Inspector Pender said the accused was respect* ably connected, but seemed to have got I among a bad lot, and was going the wrong way. Mr Westenra warned the prisoner tha_ though he would be let off leniently this time, if he came up again the present case would be remembered against him. He was ordered to pay 10s for the assault, 7a 6d, for breaking the glass, and 2s 6d for tho interpreter. & for cab hire, and 7a 6d far doctor.

Alleged Labokhy.—•Margaret Webster, who was charged with stealing a rug valued at £4 and a chemise valued at 5s 6d, the property of Neta Warren, was reported by the police to be suffering from tho effects of drink, and she was remanded for seven-day*
