SCHOLARSHIP EXAMINATIONS, 1891.
c Mr J. V. Colborne-Veel submitted th. following report to the Education Board yes terday :—" I have the honor, on behalf of the Inspectors and myself, to submit the results of the examination for scholarships in Classes C and D. The table appended gives the marks assigned to each candidate in each subject. In Class C the three who stand highest are Arthur Craddock, David Sherlaw and John Cross; in Class D, Alice Osborne is first and William Campbell second. We wish to call attention to the fact that the allotment of the scholarships between these classes gives, on the present occasion, three to be competed for by five candidates in Class C, and two by eight candidates in Class D. An arrangement obviously unequal, and particularly unfavorable to the candidates in Class D, who, unlike those in Class C, will have no further opportunity of competing for scholarships. The competitors were as under :— Class C—(Total marks 900.)
Arthur Craddock, Boys' High School... 592 David Shu-law, Boys' High School ... 538 John Cross, Boys' High School ... 473 Annie Reeve, Girls' High School ... 468 H. Maddison, Boys' High School ... 458
Class D—(Total marks 900). Alice Osborne, Girls' High School ... 603 William Campbell, Boys' High School 593 Wm. Jeff, Ashburton Boys' High School 556 Katie Scott, Girls' High School ... 529 John OUivier, Christ's College ... 490 Sarah Montcrief, Girls' High School... 400 Arthur Cooper, Christ's College ... 352 Albert Rankin, Boys' High School ... 351
