Football Social. —An enjoyable social gathering took place in the Volunteer Hall, 'i'emnka, on Tuesday, in connection with the local football club. The President, _4r J. T. M. Hay hurst, sent an apology for unavoidable absence, and enclosed a donation of two guineas to the funds. An enjoyable programme of songs and dances •ffas then got through, refreshments being diipensed at about half-past cen o'clock. Messrs McLeod and Gimson kindly played accompaniments, and Messrs Levens and Goodwillie furnished the dance music. The gathering was so enjoyable that it is intended to conclude the season with a similar one.

The) following tableaux »vere given:—" The Dirty Boy," " Pygmalion and Galatea," "The Three Old Maids of Lea." "Catching and Caught," and *' Britannia." There was a large audience, who "rigorously applauded all the pieces, the part songs and comic element perhaps receiving the largest share of applause. At the conclusion of tbe entertainment hearty cheers were given for the performers. A dance, which was kept up ■With 6pirit till about 4 a.m., followed the concert. The proceeds are for the Rakaia Parsonage fund and repairs to the Methven English Church.

Ashbtjeton Hounds.—The Ashburton Hounds met at Methven on Wednesday, -lay 13th; there was only a small field. The first draw was one of the Springfield paddocks, about two miles from Methven. The two first hares found were quickly lost owing to the ground being fouled by sheep, but one found in a paddock opposite Mr Lynes' gave a -cry last run ot* some four miles, and was lost at Mr Cameron's golly camp. The hounds were then taken back to the first paddock, tried, and a hare was found which gave a very nice run serosa Messrs Uiyett's and Cameron's farms to Cairnbrao, then across Messrs McLean and Campbell's farms on to Mr Hendersons, where she was killed. The distance run was about four and a half miles, time thirty minutes. Joyce, M.H.E.. to whom he promised that a telephone should be placed between Duvauchelle's and Okain's Bays, and that other bays could be similarly treated upon making the necessary arrangements. Sudden Dbath.—On Tuesday evenin*n old man, sixty years of a ce , named VVilham Page, residing alone in French Farm, Akaroa, died suddenly. A post mortem examination was held, and at the inquest yesterday, at Grange's Hotel, a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. He is not known to have any relations in the colony. Naebow Escape fbom Poisoning.—A Napier telegram says :—A family named Stubbs, at Olive, had a narrow escape. Water in which arsenic had been mixed for gardening purposes was used to make tea. All the family were taken dangerously ill, but fortunately the quantity of arsenic taken was so large as to cause violent vomiting, and with medical attention all are recovering.

Complimentary Ball. —On Wednesday evening a bail was given in the Oddfellows' Hall at Amberley in honor of Mr and Mrs A. H. Norman, of the Bank of New Zealand, upon Mr Norman's departure for Australia. The affair was well attended, and passed off most pleasantly. Mutual Agbncy Company.—A Dunedin telegram says : —The Mutual Agency Company's Directors declare a dividend of 3 per cent., making with the interim divi dend a return of 8 par cent, on the paid up capital, and they divide an amouut equal to 5 per cent, on the shares by way of bonus to shareholders according to the business done by them.

H.M.S. Oubaqoa.—This vessel arrived in port yesterday morning shortly before 11 o'clock. Since her departure, on Tuesday last, some useful gun practice has been indulged in, for which the weather has been most suitable. The vessel now lies in her former position inside the moles.

Accident at Eakaia.—Last night a boy named John Smith, aged ten, was admitted to the Christchurch Hospital suffering from a badly crushed knee, caused .by the wheel of a dray passing over it on his father's farm at Soulh Eakaia. The little sufferer was carefully attended to by Drs. Ovenden and Harrison, but the injuries received are serious.

Fatality Among Lambs.—A Wellington telegram says .hat the Stock Department has had under consideration a fatality among lambs reported from the Tauranga district. It has been decided to send Mr McLean, the Veterinary Surgeon of the Department, to Tauranga to make enquiries, and he leaves for Auck land to day. The Department consider that as the sheep receive J at Eatikati from the affected district are free from any ailment the fatality is due either to the .oil at Tauranga being so poor as not to provide sufficient food, or the presence of some poisonous plant.

W-BLEYAN MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION. —The Secretary of the Christchurch Wesleyan Mutual Improvement Association, Mr .England, has received the following communication from Mr Guthrie, A.D.C. to his Excellency the Governor: —" It will afford his Excellency much pleasure to give his patronage to the Christchurch Wesleyan Mutual Improvement Association." It may be noted that this Association was established in 1865, being the first of its kind in Christchurch, and at present it is in a very flourishing condition. Polio Accommodation at Kaiapoi.— Owing to the recent removal of the police office at Kaiapoi, and the fact that no other suitable premises are available, the constables have been compelled to resort to one of the cells of the lock-up in which to do their book-keepincr. Stewart, District Grand President, and the Grand Lodge officers paid an official visit to the Lodge. An adjournment was made for harmony, when songs were given by Bros. S winnerton, Harris, Stewart, Tomson (Pioneer), Paops, Hobson, Biel. Wotten, Spring, Hancock and Rennie. Readings were given by Bros. Bottomly and Hobson. Bro. Hobson moved a vote of thanks to the visitors, and expressed a hope that their term of office would be both pleasant and prosperous. Bro. Hancock seconded the motion, which was carried by acclamation. The District Grand President responded, and also addressed a few words to tbe Lodge on the best means of extending the Order and strengthening the Lodges. Bro. Sirah, of the Lyttelton Lodge was nominated for D.P. of No. 2 District. The Lodge was then closed in due form by the A.D.
