Mr Sarritt took the affirmative, Mr Koxbury tbe negative. After botli SpeaWii lifld nlaJd iLei* 6p6ilih^ remarks, the subject -was declared open for discussion, and a number of members expressed their opinion. The vote was taken, the negative side ■winning by a good majority. On Monday evening next the Society will hold its mock banquet, when the hall will no doubt be well filled.
The weekly meeting of the Papanui Mutual Improvement and Recreation Club ■was held on Monday evening in the We - Jcyan Sunday Schoolroom. The Rev. D. J. Murray, President, was in the chair, and there was a good attendance. The evening being set apart for the " President's letterbox, the questions given and answered provoked some lively discussion. At the weekly meeting of the Catholic Literary Society, held on Tuesday last, Mr Clarkson, Vice - President, occupied the chair. There was a large number of members present. One new member was elected, and notice was given by Mr Cooper of some important business to be brought before the annual meeting of the Society. 'It being a " social" night, a very excellent programmo of songs, readings, and recitations was given very successfully. It was announced that on Tuesday next Mr Geo. R. Hart would give a lecture, entitled "The Romance of Colonisation; or, Our First Quarter of a Century," being the continuation of the lecture on " Early Canterbury " delivered before the Society some little time back. The lecture will be delivered at the hall of the Society, Tuam street, at 8 p.m., and the public are invited to be present on the occasion.
