(press association telegrams. 1 AUCKLAND, February 6. Some of the best specimens of ruby silver yet found in the Puhipuhi have been brought from a new winze in the No. 1 Prospectors mine. In the case of the Queen v Mackechnie, an action brought by tbe Crown againat E. A. Mackechnie, solicitor, to recover certain deeds which the defendant held as a hen for costs due to him by .the Kaihu Valley Railway Company in respect of certain lands, over which the Orown held a mortgage. Mr Justice Connolly, in giving judgment, said the question for the decision of the Court was whether the defendant had a right to detain the documents, as against the plaintiff, on the gronnds alleged in the statement of claim. He had come to the conclusion, although not without reluctance, that the question must be answered in the negative. Mr Hesketh, who appeared for the defendant, said he would probably appeal. A United Co-operative Association, which includes as its officers prominent members of the labor party, has been formed here. Mr W. L. Rees, M.H.R., has been appointed President. The warship Curagoa arrived from Wellington to-day. WANGANUI, February 5. A well-attended and enthnsiastio meeting of citizens was held this evening, when the following resolutions were passed:— " (1) That on the occasion of the Premier's first visit to Wanganui since his appointment to that high and honorable position, the inhabitants, through a deputation, meet him on his arrival at the Railway Btation, and present him with an address of congratulation." (2.) "That a complimentary banquet be tendered to the Hon. the Premier by the inhabitants of Wanganui." A Committee was also appointed to give effect to the foregoing resolutions. The Wanganui Agricultural and Pastoral Association's Autumn Show opened to-day. The exhibits numbered some 820, including an excellent Bhow of horses and live stock. The weather was splendid. The show continues to-morrow. WELLINGTON, February 6. The Wellineton Bowing Club will send crews to the Wanganui and Lake Forsyth regattas. The senior crew now consist of J. Bose (stroke), W. A new Wesleyan church, which has just been erected at a coat of £210, was opened to-day, the services being conducted by the Revs. J. Ward, pastor of the church, and the Revs. Ryburn and Beorof fc. DUNEDIN. February 5. Mr R. S. Hawkins, of Wellington, was to-day admitted by Mr Justice Williams • as a barrister and solicitor. a conference of Mayors of euburban boroughs was held this evening to consider the desirability of amalgamating. As all were not represented only a conversational discussion took place, and it was decided to convene another meeting. The Horseshoe Bend tributers at Kawaran have washed up, and the result is 420z for twelve days.
