SOUTH WAIMAKARIRI RIVER BOARD.

TO THB EDITOR OF TUB PBE3B. Sib,—A subieader Iα the Star of the 28th Januury calls attention to the remarks cl the Chairman of the South Wairaakariri River Board (Mr Boag), in stating at a meeting of the Selvryn County Council that the Biver Board would, with the assistance of other local bodies and the Government, continue to make protective works in the river at Chaney's. i It Is plainly seen from the report of the River Board that a large majority of its members are against spending anymore money at this point, and they want to make it appear that the Board was con* eutuced to protect Christchurch only. X cannot find anything in the Act which leads to this conclusion, and so long as we in the country are called upon to pay river rates, surely we are entitled to some protection. It is to be hoped the Chairman will stick to his intention, and, that the members representing the country will see that it is the duty of the Board to protect property outside of the city. Unless something is done soon at Chaney's to prevent further encroach* ments by the river great ioas is likely to eventuate, and an opinion from the beat eneineering authority possible would Oβ money well spent, and would relieve the Board of a heavy responaibility.—'SrottW, &c, Obsebybb.
