He at once divested himself of his coat, and succeeded in rescuing the child, who, owing to Mr Hall'a prompt action, suffered; nothing worse than a fright and a wetting. Thb Bank op New Zealand's " Whits JjtfflPKAMTS."—Our Auckland correspondent telegraphs as follows:—The following is from the "Herald to-day: "The Stud Company was oue of the Bank of New Zealand's " white elephants," according to Mr Buckley. Bat it has realised more than the whole amount of the indebtedness, and more than the amount at which it was estimated as likely to puduce by Mr Eean. This is the first of " white elephants" to be realised, and if the others turnout anything like as well (and men who can judge are confident that they will do so), the Bank of New Zealand will be greatly benefited. We understand that Major George always contended that the Stud Company was worth, i'2o,'ooo. His opinion has been fully justified* The Phonograph.—-A Timaru correspondent telegraphed last night as follows: —Edison's marvellous phonograph, or " talking machine," was exhibited here to-night for the last time at the Theatre Eoyal. The building was crowded to the doon, many being unable to obtain admission. % The songs by Mr J. L. Fire at Stdznhah.—About a quarter past 12 s yesterday a fire broke out in the flock, mill of Mr Maddern, Shakespeare street, Sydenham, and the building and contents were completely destroyed. The fire was caused by a spark. Mr Maddern saw it as soon as it commenced, and tried to beat it out. The fiamea, however, spread with such rapidity that Mr Maddern was obliged to seek safety, after getting his hands badly burned. The alarm waa given by the eyren, and Mr Superintendent Turton telephoned to the Lie ti field street station, and the chemical engine woe at the scene of the fire six minutes after the order was given. The fire having spread so" rapidly there was no time to save any of the contents, and nothing could be done by the Brigade on then* arrival to prevent . their . total destruction. The building was of galvanised iron. The machinery waa insured in the Commercial Union office for jftLOO, but the building and stock (of which about i>so was burned) were uninsured.
