The Stores Department report and lighting returns are on the table. A farther communication has been received from the Otago Harbor Board In reference to the price of the Dredge No. 222. ■*"* interim report will be read from Mr Webster in reference to the poundings he Iβ taking over tne portion of the harbor recently dredged. The matter will be considered by the Harbor Improvement Committee as soon as the soundings are completed. The late strong gales have delayed this work. The Harbor Improvement Committee.m conjunction wich the members of the Cool Chamber Committee, met and considered a telegram from the Hallway Commissioners, objecting to the site for the cool chamber near the ocean steamer's jetty, as ihey alleged it would obstruct the view on to and from the Ocean Steamer Jetty, and consequently interfere with the shunting operations. The Committee have had a hoarding erected showing the exact position of the building on the ground, and to what extent, if at all, it obstructs the view along the curves on to the wharf. A letter, which will be read, was posted to the Railway Commissioners, toeetber with a plan showing this, on the 24th inst., and asking them to reconsider the matter, but as yet » c have not received their reply. In the meantime the acceptance of the tender (£29& i) for the buildiug is suspended; also the sending the order Home for the ammonia plant, which is estimated to cost £1050 f.0.0. in London. A letter will be read from Mr James Jennett, in reference to the recent case of drowning at New Brighton, by which his son lost his life; also a rider passed by the jury. Iα March last che Board decided to make enquiry, and, if necessary, erect notice boards, provided it was in their power to do so. This, however, appeared to be doubtful, as the notices which were then princed would have to be erected on the road belonging to the Road Board. A letter was addressed to them by the Harbor Board on the subject, but so reply has, been received. The notice boards have now been erected by this Board in anticipation of the Road Board's concurrence. - Colonel Lean applied to mc for the tug bo take, volunteers to and from Purau on Anniversary Day, it being a field day, and I authorised it on these grounds. Mr Dando has furnished a list of the wire, &c, required for the electric light extension to the dock and Naval Point, as authorised by the. Board, and he estimates the cost at £370 to .£3BO, an order will be accordingly sent home for it. I'nrther correspondence will be read in reference to the New Brighton Tramway bridge. An application from Moses Barton for the -Laborers' Shelter Shed on New Tear's Day has been received. The Regatta Committee object to It being grafted on the ground that they have sold the sole right of selling refreshments to someone else. • Two applications for increase of pay will be considered by the Board at tbe annual meeting. The Board laid this rule down on 25th September, 1889. Application is made by the Roman Catholic Bazaar, to be held in Lyttelton on the 31st December and the Ist and 2nd January, for the electric light. This has been granted, on previous occasions the Bazaar paying the'cost. - Accounts to the amount of £903 7s lOd were passed for payment. A report was read from the Harbor Master with reference to the fouling of the. propeller of the s.s. Dingadee wi h a rope, and the loan of the diving dress. The Harbor Master also reported as re^ §arded the statement - that the Union seamship Company's steamer Monowai had struck outside the moles on December sth. The report; stated that what had happened was that the steamer, which was going out very slowly, was caught by the flood tide, and canted to the westward. .

The reports were received. The following correspondence was read: —From the Harbor Master, enclosing report of the night watchman with regard to the blocking of the Gladstone Pier by the Railway Department leaving trucks thereon.

Ie was resolved to forward copies of the report to the Railway Commissioners, and request their attention thereto. From the Dunedia Harbor Board with reference to the sale of Dredge No. 222. The correspondence was referred to the Harbor improvement Committee. The Chairman said that a telegram had been received from the Railway Commissioners with reference to the cool chamber site. The telegram stated that, while the Commissioners were anxious to afford every facility of access by siding to the proposed cool chamber for dairy produce, they had a strong objection to the site selected as shutting out the view from and to the ocean steamers jetty, thereby materially increasing the danger of shunting operations. The Commissioners suggested that the Board should consider the taking another si c on the land belonging to the Board on Godley Quay. As had been stated the Harbor Board Improvement and Cool Chamber Committee had considered the telegram and had the hoarding erected to show to what extent the view was shutout. A letter had also been sent dealing with the objections of the Commissioners, to which at present no answer had been received.

The action of the Chairman and Committees in the matter of the letter, &c, was approved, as also the suspension of action in connection with the tender,' and the ordering of the ammonia plant from JUmdon.

A letter was read from Mr Jennett with reference to" the drowning of his son aC New Brighton, and also the rider to the verdict of the Coroner's Jury at the inquest on the body of young Jennett. The Chairman explained what had been done with regard to corresponding with the Avon Koad Board as to the erection of notice boards, and the action of the Harbor Board in the matter. It was resolved co forward a letter to Mr Jennett expressing the sympathy of the Board, but declining to recognise any responsibility on the part of the Harbor Board. * -

A letter was read from the Marine Dβ* partment seating that a communication had been received from the solicitor oi the Avon Steam Packet Company asking that steps might be taken to render the navigation of the River Avon free for the Company's steamer. The Department pointed out that as the River Avon at this place was within the limits of Fort Lyttelton, the matter was one for the Board to deal with, as the doty of keeping the navigation free from obstruction devolved on the Board. The Secretary to the Harbor Board forwarded the letter to the New Brighton Tramway Company, and requested immediate attention thereto. . The Kew Brighton Tramway Com* pany wrote acknowledging receipt of copy of the letter from eheMariue Department, and pointing out that the tramway. Jmdge, though ooiit at the Company's expeuse, was really a. public bridge, and was largely used for general traffic. It was also pot ted out that the steamer of th'e Company could pass under the bridge at all times except at or near hiethstfater. " It was resolved- to defer the consideration of the matter until next meeting. A letter was read from Mr Moses Barton, asking for the use oS the shelter shed Oh New Year's Day vending refreshments. ■.. :; / '■■ - ' ; : It was resolved to decline to grant the permission asked for. It was decided to order the extra electric lighting plant from England, as recommended by the Engineer. :.•-■■:■-■• On the motion of Mr McClatchib, the use of the electric light was granted to the Eoman Catholic bazaar on the terms mentioned by the Chairman in his speech. , .'.'..'•"'.''■ The Board then adjourned until Jan. vary 19th, at 12.15 p.m. j
