WAKANUI RACES AND SPORTS.

The annual races and athletic sports held at Wakanui, near Ashburton, took place yesterday, in a paddock kindly leut for the occasion by Mr James Brown. There Was a* large gathering of farmers and their famili-s, together with many visitors,from Ashbur on and the immediate vicinity. "The programme for the day consisted of four horse-raclug events and a number of athletic sports, all of which were successfully got off, the gathering resulting in a very pleasant outing both for tbe town and country folk. Mr J. Cod-born, Mr J. Jamieson, Mr Dickie and; others of the' Comuiittee worked very, hard, and are deserving of praise for making the meeting a pleasing success. The Wakanui Cup, the principal horse event, was won by a nice stamp of a horse King of Ulster, by St. George out of a Traduce?; mare. Hardwick's Tommy, (Owner) 2.' Inchkeith also ran. luchkeith led to the third jump, where the rider, M. Patterson, came a nasty cropper. Master. King of Ulster was brought to the front,' and going away-won easily by a number of leugths. The Handicap , Trot of 5 soys, second horse 2 soys, three miles, was won easily by Mr P.Stewart's Belle, Oosecs; Mr R. Cass' Montrose, 60se., second. Minuie scratch, Cascade 40sec, and jenny Sosec, also started. - A Hurry Scurry was won by Mr S. BrownV John 111 beating seven others. McFarlane was first past tbe post in a three mile handicap bicycle race for a silver cup, value. £o, bat a. protest! waa entered on account, of a mistake in the starting.
