AT THE PARK.

The gathering at the Park was one bent Solely on pleasure, and that everyone ■enjoyed themselves was apparent. The weather was simply beautiful, the pro- - j****eamme of sports was attractive, tbe officers efficiently discharged their duties, j and the events were got on?with a punctuallty which is not always seen at such •gatherings. Arrangements for the convenience of those actually engaged -taring the day were complete, and ! a boon, the want of which had been felt Sn years gone by, was accomplished, the "so-fenced track had been fenced off. This fe&nt the enclosure comparatively clear. tmd the interested public, who had assembled iv great numbers, watched with , -"greater ease from the terrace the various Boatests of skill aad endurance. The -mature comforts were abundantly 1 provided in anticipation by the proprietors 'ot a profitable day, and so far as Sp_e amusements common to such -.ports were concerned there was no : room for con-plaint. Mr E. Ravenbill dispensed the stronger drinks, - |{_> j. Robinson was in charge of the light Kfreshmeats, and Messrs Brett and Pickering respectively provided a merry- - gt-f-round and swing-boats, while fortane- " belling la an improved fashioa found steady occupation.for Madame Jackson, fche palmist. Children were to be seen i {(laying in all directions, and they were pot forgotten. A Committee, composed of ifesst-sAW. Langford, A. Hill, G. F. Straw, W. B. Mafiett and J. Fisher, with numerous volunteers, delighted the youngsters fey distributing toys and lollies. Music tfaa discoursed throughout the day by the ' Stanmore and Sydenham brass bands, no that there was nothiag to prevent hearty and thorough enjoyment by all who tiaited Hagley Park yesterday. Among the events there were some keen and exriling contests aad the Grand Sheffield Handicap was not the exception. For It there were tweaty-four acceptances, and when the last eveat was finished and the points declared, an enthusiastic cheer was raised for the baadieappers. F. • Chisnall won the big prize with 8 points. He was closely fallowed by two others, who divided second and third money, and they again oaly beat their opponents by a Slot. The bicycle races were interesting, t could scarcely be called a prominent feature, as the track did not allow hard riding with safety. The surprise of the day was undoubtedly the success of young Boyd, who rode with care and steadiness and exhibited tbe making of a fast wht-clman oa the track, A third feature of the programme was the Fire Brigade competitions aad ambulance work, which were watched with jealous eyes as the rival brigades strove against one another for honors. All the events -were well filled, and the whole affair was managed in a proper fashion. The anniversary •-porta of 1890 were marked by successes which should be highly gratifying to their promoters, and the fact that not a hitch •jccurred speaks well of the efforts of the Officers, Committee and delegates, upon whom devolved the task of attending to the programme.
