Only a moderate start was effected, Swing and Tartar being last to move. After traversing five furlongs Insignia had a slight lead, but on entering the straight Magnus was on terms with him, and Eclipse was close up. At the distance Magnus was done with, and Eclipse challenging Insignia gradually wore him down, and won by a length. Antelope wa3 last. Hilda was never prominent in the race. Time, 2min [The winner ran unplaced last season in a number of unimportant events, and his victory must have been a great surprise. Hilda was backed down to 4 to 1 in New Zealand, and a lot of money was lost over her here.}
