CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, ISjlx 14. (Before M. Harris and S. D. Barker, Esqrs. J.P.'s.) DRgsKKNygss, &c—Richard Mackie, who came into the dock with his clothes in tatters, his face cut and bruised, and who limped considerably, was chained with being drunk, resisting the police, and using obscene language. Constable Kenny and Sergeant Keating stated that, aC about eleven o'clock on the previous night, the accused, being noisy about the corner of Colombo and Gloucester streets, was desired to move on. He then lay down. Constable Kenny undertook to arrest him, when he resisted violently, and it took both officers to handcuff him, pat him in a cab, and keep him there till he arrived at the lock-up. The accused told the Bench that he had received the injuries to his face in the lock-up, that he had been cruelly illused in the street and in the cab, and he asked that some one might be compelled to replace his clothes, which had been destroyed. An independent witness proved that accused had fallen with bis face against the kerbstone and that he was not knocked about by the police unnecessarily, Mr Harris said that he could not expect to come harmless out of such a struggle, as he himself had made, and fined him 5s for drunkenness, 7s 6d for doctor's services, and ordered him to be imprisoned for seven days for resisting the police. By-Laws.—Wm. Cook for allowing a cow to be at large in Lincoln road was fined 53, LYTTELTON. Wednesday, May 14. [Before R. Beetham, Esq., R.M.] Drunkenness.—James Raitte was fined 103, or in default forty-eight hours, for this offence. Insulting Language.—Mrs Treleaven was charged on the information of Mrs Anthony with using insulting language towards her, and asked that she should be bound over to keep the peace. Mr Nalder appeared for complainant, while Mr Joyce; defended. After hearing the evidence of several witnesses the case was dismissed.

Breach of By-Laws.—Wm. Holmes was charged with allowing two horses to stray on the Governor's Bay road, and was fined 5s and costs. Mrs Bailey was charged with allowing a cow to wander on the road, and was fined os and costs. Civil Cases.—W. G. Johnston v T. Mclntosh, claim £6 14s. Mr Nalder for plaintiff. The evidence for the defence was taken in Greymouth and forwarded. Judgment for plaintiff for amount claimed and costs. T. O. Guthrie y Fisher, claim £510s. Judgment for plaintiff.
