HA WEB A, May 14. The winter meeting! of the Elgmont Racing Club was held on their coarse at Hawera to-day, and proved sufficiently attractive to draw a fair attendance, incluiing some Aucklanders. The racing; all through the meeting was keen and most interesting, and some surprises were effected, Waipipi, the winner of the Hurdle Race going out without a single investor, and the money on the machine, fsome- !£3O, had to be returned. In the RailwayHandieap Eileen, a halfsister of Norinanby, bred by Captain Standish, of Taranaki, paid the nice dividend of £30. A Nelson ' Press Association telegram states that the newly-formed Trotting Club hold a meeting on the Queen's birthday, for which good nominations have been received. . An Auckland telegram states that the racehorse Eruption whilst exercising at Walters' estate, Papakura, collided with a cow and fell heavily, breaking his back; so that he had to be destroyed. * Eruption was the property of Mr French, and was by Leolinus—Venus Transit. •• - ♦
