FUTURE BORROWING.
TO THE EDITOR O» THE PRRS*. Sib, —I thiak some vigorous stepeehouJi be taken by those who are mostly late ested, to expose the too evident Intento of those supporting tho Opposition k gradually woric up mc deluded peopled this colony into atfaiu borrowing, lor the purpose of carrying ou further public works. Unhappily the working clauses, especially, are easily led to believe that borrowing money, uo matter at what coat, will be proiitable to them If spent la public works. Take, lor instance, the loan for Christchurch. We were cold &l the time that it would not bo necessary M raise any rate to pay the interest on this loan, and the vote was caried, of course, by acclamation. How was the money expended? Partly in a hearse and mourning coach, ana partly on a tratmvay, and the building of a bridge to the i*ark, aud which works were quito unnecessary. What is the result f This year's rates are to be b.dded to by threepence in the & What reliance, therefore, can Oβ placed Iα the statements of those who havo penver placed In their hands If It is the aauia with regard to Government loans. Here, in Christchurch, we have an Opposition paper which pretends to ridicule tho ides that the economist* do not intend Sβ go in for another loan. Everybody connected with tho Government is abused in most unmitigated terms, and very often in language that can hardly (m exceeded by the moao rabid Fenian penny-a-liner. We are told iv plain language that all connected with the Government are liars aud fools, it uot worae, and that the only virtuous people connected with politico are riir JtJobert Stou6| Mr Batlauce, aud Sir Julius Vogel, This is the style of the language ia this so-called leading jouruai. However, we have the satisfaction o£ seeing that tho Preas, not only in England, but of the neighboring Colonies, UDhold the action of the present Government, and praises the people 01 this colony for supporting a policy oi esri and economy. 1 aincereiy hope that tae opinions of those who'sun judge QjT.aj impartially may have its due effect, .wa that these opinions may have due weigni in counterbalancing the rubbish.,that-Hi* endeavored to thrust down our throats Iβ praise of such rank failures as Messrs iiallance and Co. As to Mr Lance's polie/» which has so shut up your contemporaift lehall have Bomethiug to say iv a Man issue,—latn, dec, ■: ■_
