THE BARQUE GAZELLE.

iJK* & & r "^ n^on \ handsome llttid barque Gazelle, under charter to Mr & W. Toner, arrived i&

port on Saturday morning from the island of Mauritius with a cargo of sugar. She has been rather longer over the voyage than the Rio Logo, which arrived on Friday, and this is mainly due to the foul state of her bottom, coupled with the exceptional spell of light weather experienced to running down the Easting and the calms and adverse winds met with on the coast of New Zealand. Although matters have been against Captain Munro in making a passage, the fine weather has been made use of in beautifying his -vessel and she comes into port in excellent order and condition. The following is the report of the voyage : — Left Port Louis 28th September and carried light South breeze to west end of the Mauritius, where she lay three days becalmed, thence light variable winds to 14th October, in latitude 38.19 South 63.58 East. Picked N.W. breeze, and breasted St. Paul's on the 18th, in 42 South, the weather being squally from the S. and S.W. and backing, and followed by N.W. to W. winds with rain and squalls to Cape Leuwin, the meridan of which was crossed on the 30th October, in 44 South. On the 31st the wind veered to the S.E. and E., and increased to a gale, which continued for three days, with rain and thick nasty weather and heavy easterly sea, the vessel being then in 40 South, the wind then backed to S.W. by W. to N.W. with rain. Passed Tasmania on the 9th instant, with strong N. winds and heavy squalls, with thick rain in latitude 46.37 S. From there had light southerly weather to making the West Cape on Sunday, the 17th inst., and lay becalmed all day; took a' light westerly breeze during the night, and passed the Bluflf at 8 o*clockthe following morning. Breasted Cape Saunders on Tuesday, and lay becalmed there all day: thence to arrival light airs and calms and thick foggy weather. The Gazelle is to be docked at Lyttelton.
