RICCARTON TRAINING NOTES.

Saturday Morning Being fine, some useful work was accomplished, and I found the track in better order than for some time. Repose was doing good work, and as she has a Wellington engagement this fact may be mentioned. The various Cup and Derby candidates were given work of a more or less useful character, and quite a number of two-year-olds were worked. My business and the public interest just now is centred in the horses engaged in the coming meetings of the Canterbury Jockey and Christchurch Hunt Clubs. Monteagle moved off very sore, but was sent three times round the track at a strong pace. Louis and the Ashburton mare performed two circuits at a strong pace, Louis having very little the best of his company. Batchelor led Southern Chief twice round at a useful pace. Dady Longlegs, with his owner, Mr Cox, in the saddle, was schooled over the post and rail fences and the double, and went in nice style over them. He was also cantered a couple of miles round the tan. Stonewall Jackson, who is green and in no condition for a severe race, was schooled over the same obstacles, and after going twice round was pulled off on to the tan, and sent about two miles. This is one of the plainest looking of the Painters, but he at least inherits the jumping qualities aud good legs of the family, and may ripen into a useful animal. Mexico was seufc over the post and rail fence and over the stiffest one cleared seven and twenty feet of measured ground iv grand style. More than one of those which followed him made long jumps, also notably Playboy. Irish King (Kingan), Gunpowder (Lyford), Playboy (Mitchell) and Landsborough (Clarke), then emerged from their boxes, and as each of the riders were divested of their coats it was seen that business was meant. After going once round over the smaller obstacles in single file they were pulled up and sent over the bigger fences once in Indian file, with Playboy and GunSowder in advance, Irish King, pulling arc, followed by Landsborough. After going once round Irish King rushed to the front, and led over the double, at the first of which he looked like stopping, and had to be straightened up with the stick, and at the second he was nearly off, but he finished over the big post and rail in good style, and then took a circuit inside tbe jumps before Kingan could pull him up. Landsborough missed this fence tbe first time, being too strong headed for Clarke, but next time round all three, Playboy, Gunpowder and Landsborough, cleared it pretty well together, Gunpowder standing off the further, Playboy covering most ground on the landing side, and Landsborough making a nice evenly-judged jump. The ground was in good order for schooling, and the horses altogether in better form than their riders, who each seemed to have had quite enough. Kingan had quite a treat on the son of Hibernian. A bit of football practice would not be amiss by way of improving tbe wind and developing condition of the jockeys. Spectator.
