With last week opened what is considered one of the quietest months of the year, and business generally in the import market was only of a moderate character. The new regulations regarding the terms of credit came into force on the first, and as the month advances will, no doubt, check operations to some extent. The news of the death of Mr Fletcher, of the firm of Messrs Fletcher, Humphries, and Co., was received with universal regret, more especially by the commercial community. As has been already noticed in other columns of this paper, Mr Fletcher

has been so closely associated with commercial circles for such a number of years, that his l°as "will be greatly felt. Engagements falling due on the 4th were met with pleasing promptness, as was anticipated. The Rothesay Bay has arrived from London after a protracted passage. Consignees will be pleased to receive their shipments with despatch, as many lines of merchandise by this vessel are wanted on the market. The Opawa, from London, arrived yesterday. Teas have met with fair sales. Boxes of low and finest grades are now scarce with some demand. Frequent deliveries of kerosene are pass} ing, the demand being chiefly for high teat oil, which fetches up to 2s, according to brand. The several agents of tobaccos report trade sales only* As is usual at this season, candles meet with improved demand, and stocks are now more than sufficient for regular requirements. The colonial manufacturers report heavy orders, chiefly for the lower qualities. Jams, marmalade, and all goods in which sugar is an ingredient show a sharp rise. Rice, sago, and tapioca meet with ordinary sales at late quotations. In cocoas Van Houten's, Cadbury'a, and Fry's meet with regular sales, as also does essence of coffee. Tinned fish of all descriptions are dull of sale. Currants are in short supply, and fetch tip to sd. Vestas, 250's at 18s, and 1000's at from 67s 6d. Fine and coarse are without quotable change. Bottled ale and stout of first brands meet with regular sales. In spirits, Scotch whiskey at from 6a to 9s 6d LB. commands most attention. Port wine is in fair demand at from 7s 6d to 12s 6d LB. Low quality is scarce. Rum meets with improved business. Geneva and old torn meet with a fair inquiry.
