The ordinary meeting of the above Council was held at the office of the Council, Waiau, on Tuesday, 2nd July. 1889. Present—Messrs A. W. Rutherford (Chairman), D. Rutherford, D. D. Norchcote substituted for his on the rate roll on "behalf of sections 2 and 3, block xviii., on the plan of the Waiau township. Granted. From Mr W. A. Low, complaining that the water is not turned off the Upper Waiau bridge catting; the consequence is that there is a solid sheet of ice across the bridge, and stating that some horses fell wid were lamed. The Overseer was instructed to turn the water off and to batten the decking of the bridge where the horses walk, and to clear oat the catting. From Mr J. W. M. Cox, offering 8s per cwt for fencing wire at water-race. Accepted. From Mr J. D. Lance, M.H.R., stating that subsidies to local bodies will be the same as last year. From the same, stating that he presented to Parliament the petition forwarded by this Council relating to the alteration of the Licensing Act. From Mr W. Thomson, manager of Balmoral, asking for some repairs to be done to the road leading from the Homestead to the Railway Station, and stating that the only way to make a good job of it is to form and shingle it. Resolved, that the Overseer attend to the matter when the gang are ' done in the Waiau. From Cr. ActonAdams, asking for leave of absence from the meeting owing to pressure of work in his office. Granted. From Mr W.Allen, Chairman: of the School Committee, Rotherham, asking for a few loads of shingle in front of the schooL Granted. From the Paymaster-General, advising having paid the sum of £9 to the credit of this Council into the Union Bank as fees, fines, and penalties collected from unlicensed hawkers and owners of unregistered dogs at theR.M. Court, Waiau. Received. A petition was received from Mr F.A. Thompson and five residents In tne Waiau, asking the Council to repair Hawkswood street. To be informed that the Council declines to interfere with the dairying interest in the Waiau; and also, if this street was formed it might be the means of bringing water on the sections. A petition was also received from Mr Jas. Macfarlane and twenty-two other property owners and residents in Rotherham, applying to have part of their property incorporated in the Waiau Plains water supply district, and for the Council to levy a special rate on the ares shown as security for the borrowing for the extension of the present water supply throughoat the said district. Resolved—That the petitioners be requested to forward to this ofllce a plan showing the locality where the race is required. Some minor correspondence from tenderers re the erection of the Hurunui traffic bridge was received. The Engineer's report was duly received re the acceptance of a tender for the re-erection of the Hurunni bridge, and after due consideration it was unanimously resolved to ask Mr Walkden to prepare plans and specifications for the bridge, and that fresh tenders be called for the work, returnable by next meeting, to be held on Tuesday, 6th August. The bridge to be strong enough to carry twenty tons, and the cost not to exceed £2800, timber to be all iron bark or red gum, except the hand-rails which must be V.D.L. Resolved—That the petition prepared by Mr Joynt re the care, control and management of the Hurunui bridge be returned, with instructions to him to include only the Weipara Road Board in the Ashley•County, the Wairau and Awatere Road Boards in the Marlborough county, and the whole_oj the Kaikoura county, as the local contributing bodies towards the erection and maintenance of the said bridge; that Mr J. W. Thomas be paid the sum of £15 for his services in connection with the Hurunui bridge; that Mr John Leitch be sommoned for his persistence in driving his coach on the footpath in front of the Council Chambers at Waiau; that tbe Colonial Secretary be written to and asked to extend the time for making up the electoral rolls for the various ridings within this county, in consequence of the Property Tax Commissioner not having forwarded the valuation roll in time to do so as by law provided; that the overseer be instructed to send one team and two men to clear out water channels and loose stones off the Kaikoura road, and also to make two breakwaters in tne Mason River, in order to protect «"> approach of the Waiau bridge.
