PRODUCE, &c.

i Corn Exchange report for week endiM Friday, July oth:— The week's transactions in wheat hw. been particularly meagre. OaUldevaiS • give no encouragement tor epecalatS? and holders are not caring to force aSr Produce apon bo unfavorable a matfr!? light shipments are still going for»2 to Sydney, chiefly for completion of eeS contracts entered into. The only (juT* sltion evinced to purchasers for BnC: shipment where the quality is not fin? class, and the price is low. The<*» market has hardened, and it is now 1 easy to do business at quotations than i» was last week. Local buyers are cant 1 peting in order to replenish their stock* which are becoming low. Melbourne W ■ a firm market in spite of the large ao£ ; plies that went forward last month Sellers are firm in their demands fo* prices equal to our highest quotation? Barley has had a quiet week. Shipment 1 have fallen off awaiting further adrtS from Victoria. Local requirements an fairly well supplied for the time beh» Beaus and peas have a fairly good btuT ness passing. Grass Seed remains fW 'at our prices, as also does cocksfoot for really prime heavy seed fit fo, London. Potatoes have hardened considerably, caused chiefly by th» growers having them all in nit and not caring to quote. Shipment* to date are small as compared with previous years. Dairy produce remain* dull in exporting parcels; locally the reSS trade is fairly brisk. Our quotations fortA* week are as follow*:— Wheat—Tuscan, 3s 01 to 3s 8d: neari as 4d to 3s 6d; Hunter's, 3s 3d to &Z----whole chick, 3s ; broken. 2s 8d to 2a yd. W Barley—Prime malting, 3s 9d to 3s l(M. medium. 3s to 3s 4d ; feed, 2s 8d to 2s 9d» ' Beans. 3s 2d to 3s 3d. Peas—Blue Prussians (true), 3s Cd to & 8d; feed, 3s to 3* Id. Dairy Produce—Butter, 7d to 3d; cheeaa. 3Jd to 4d. The above prices are those paid to farmers for delivery f.o.b. Sacks extra. Thk New Zealand Loan and Mα CANTILK AIiBXCY COMPANY, LIMITED, It port ou the Produce market for the wee' ending Friday, oth July, 1889:— Wool—Until the last two days t , London sules have been progressing und most favorable conditions, and we a surprised to learn that coarse crossbr is not now so firm, and also that blddin for medium wools of all classes are com what irreerular. From our cablegram, r. ceived to-day, we inlter that the markt for choice wools is att steady as when w» last wrote, a well-known Canterbury dip having averaged the satisfactory price of 12£ d for greasy, and ltfM for scoured. We presume that the easier tone for coarse crossbreds may be attributed to the supply now coming forward of Home grown fleeces, and although a temporary weak* ness may arise from this cause, we are hopeful that later on in the year the activity in trade will cause a reaction. Sheepskins—Some large catalogues vrcrt brought forward at yesterday's auction* to a good attendance of the trade, meeting with spirited competition, dry skins being in special request. The tenor of recent cable advices respecting the value of coarse wool no doubt affected the price! of skins, which throughout the day were somewhat easier. The following repre* sents the quotations current: —'Jutclieraf prime crossbreds, Ss 6d to us; medium, 4s 7d to 5s 2d : inferior, 4s to 4s (id; merinos from 3s Oα up to 5s Id; couutry skins made prices equivalent to 4d to 7d per lb, according to quality and condition. Tallow and Fat—We have no change to report in London values, and the local market is steady at former quotations, viz., lid to lgd for good rough fat, J£a medium, ;jd to Id for iuferior. ■ Hides—The market continues exceedingly dull, and tanners cannot be Induced to advance upon the following rates lately current—Ox hides, 601 b and over, 3Jd; ordinary hides, 511b and over, 2Ad; do, under 501b, 2£d; calfskins. 3fcd. ,* Wheafi—The Eugliah market has shown a slight improvement during the week, apparently due to the unfavorable reports regarding the Russian cropb. Values have advanced 6d to 9d per quarter, bat this may at any moment be lost, as latest advices report a termination of the drought in Russia. From Sydney all reports agree as to a serious depreaslon prevailing in the market there for all descriptions of wheat. Tuscan' is difficult to move at over 4s 2d, and Hunter's white is said to be unsaleable at 4s. Under these conditions it is not surprising that merchants decline to operate, especially as in the absence of enquiries Jor forward delivery there are no indications of an early improvement. Local transactions are quite of a trivial nature, and quotations are nominally those of last week:— Tuscan. 3s 7d to 3s 8d; Pearl, 3a 3d; Hunter s, 3s Id to 3s 2d. Oats—ln the absence of Australian orders, only a hand to mouth trade is passing. Holders are very firm, feeling assured that Australian wants must be supplied from New Zealand at whatever cost, and, therefore, decline to quit at under 2s 9a to 2s 10d for milling, 2e 8d to 2s 9d for stout heavy feed, and 2s 4d to 2* 6d for inferior. Barley—An unexpected element hat arisen to assist this market Iα the extra* ordinary aivance in the price of sugar, which will add greatly towards sustaining the value of malt in Australia, and no doubt alno the value of this grain in consequence. Stocks are reduced to narrow compass, and holders, believing that a fresh demand will shortly manifest itself from Australia, aro not disposed to quit at any reduction upon late rates. Prime maltiug is therefore firm at 4e, medium Ss 5d to 3s Bd, inferior 3s to 3s 3d. Beans and Peas—There Iβ no demand tot this produce except Prussian Blue pert, which are in fair enquiry at 3s 6d Lath Quotations for beans and peas are nominally 3s to 3s Id f.o.b. Ryegrass Seed—Enquiry for spring sowing is now being experienced, and fair business is passing at 4s 3d to 4s 6dfof machine dressed, 3s to 3s 6d for farmers' parcels. Cocksfoot Seed —Recent orders from Home having been filled, the demand for prime sorts has somewhat subsided. There Is, however, good enquiry for local wants, and prices are without alteration, namely. 2d to 2Jd for inferior to medium, 2fd to 3d for prime farmers' dressed seed, and 3sd to Sid extra machine dressed. Several lines of inferior seed suitable for hill country have changed hands at m perlb. , Potatoes—Business in much restricted, owing, to the firm attitude of holders, wbo decline to disturb their pits at present* Merchants find some difficulty In filling orders in consequence. During the wee* sales have been effected at 60s to (Bβ & w country stations. , Butter and Cheese—There is only » feeble trade in these lines. Australian markets offer no inducement to shippers, and merchants are only buying farloung diate wants. Butter is selling at from» to Sd, cheese 4d to 4£d per lb.

Mr D. Thomas (late of Maieon end oft) reports upon the live stock market, ending July 2nd, as follows :-On Tuesday, at the Tiuwald yards, I held my osw weekly sale of sheep, cattle, and pig*. Tfle total entry consisted of 8280 eTieep, « cattle, 14 pigs, and « rams, pf which I •Mβ 1636 sheep, 33 cattle, and 2 jpig& r» attendance was small, and bidain* throughout the sale slack, especially f<* turnip sheep. In cattle there was *n improved tone, and most of the entry was sold at an advance on late eale. Toe following are the prices realised—Fw crossbred ewes, 9e 6d, Uβ 2d, to 13e 2*. merino ewes, 5s 2d; crossbred ewes m lamb, fis 7d to 9* 6d; crossbred lamte, Tβ 9d. fn Cattle-Fat heifers, £3, £4,£4Sfc £4 129 6d; yearlings, 23a r springer*. «» 155,£5 2sed,to£s&. In Pigs-Breeding sows, £2 9s.
