MB PYKE WAXES ELOQUENT.

[from otjb special correspondent.] WELLINGTON, July 6. Mr Pyks made a very amusing.speech in support of the Ofcago Central Railway BilL which was read a second time to-day. He said he accepted the Sill as a hungry man accepted half a loaf, when he could not get a whole one. "When this Bill is passed." he said, "the work of my life will be practically done, but I can't get my passport to another world until I have driven, the last spike into this line." Describing the present condition of lands to be opened by the railway, he became poetic, "It is a scene of desolation," he said, "where the wild wind whirls and whispers weirdly o'er the plains"; "but," he added, " any man not a fool or a Government Engineer can see that the land is rich." He concluded by thanking the Premier for the honorable performance of his promise made last seesion. >
