WAIAU RACES.

Judge—G. W. Mcftae, Esq. Starter-J. Macfarlane, Esq. These annual races were held on the Achran Estate, the course being situated about half-a-mile from the township, on March Ist, and are looked forward to with pleasure, seeing that it is a meeting which is divested of all the usual objectionable features, and there is nothing but the purest sport indulged in. It may well be termed the Amuri Squatters' Picnic, for such is the shape it has assumed for a number of years, as it is on the Waiau racecourse that the respective families who are partially debarred by distance from interchange of friendly visits agree to meet as an annual custom, and there amid the enjoyment of a race meeting, discuss the various matters which would in town form the usual afternoon gossip. The booth on the ground was under the management of Mr Idle, and it goes without saying that the catering was the subject of special commendation. The various officials were indefatigable in the discharge of their duties. Messrs Hobbsand Goodwin's totalisator was on the ground, and did a fair amount of business. The weather being perfect, and no accidents or protests to mar the day's sport, and the races being got through in good time, everybody left for their homes in good spirits. Subjoined is a detailed account of the races, ,which were all post entry:— Hurdle Race of 15 soys; second horse 1 soy. Entrance, 10s. Over six jumps. Distance, one mile and a half.
