The first series of wool auctions was held here to-day, wiien catalogues aggregating abont 33Q0 bales were submitted by Various brokers to arepresentative attendance of buyers. * For the convenience of the latter all sales, were. conducted in the ' New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company's Crescent premises. The sales went off with capital spirit, bidding being very animated. At the unanimous; request bf the buyers, advances were limited to .farthings, instead of eighths. The change saved a great deal of time, and in the opinion of the brokers operated on this occasion distinctly in the growers* favor. The proportion of withdrawals was very small indeed. Merino showed a marked improvement on last -year's rates, and ruled from 7sd to 9}d. Half-bred and fair crossbred from 9d to IOJd, one particularly good light' conditioned parcel fetching llid ; crossbred realised from 7|d to 10id, according to quality and condition; Lincoln and Romney were not so mach sought after, and brought from 7fd to BJd.
