AUCKLAND, January 25.

Entries for the coming Auckland regatta were received to-night, and are fairly numerous. Ihe champion whaleboat race has only three nominations, aad the large cutter race fell through. Sir F. Whitaker has been re-elected President of the Auckland Law Society for the ensuing year. A number of business men and others have notified the Auckland Regatta Committee that they will discontinue their support to the regatta funds should it come to their knowledge that the competing crews practice on the Sundays. The Committee decided to reply that though they possessed no control over competing crews, they did not encourage the practice complained of. Tne Board of Education have received a large number of additional protests from country Committees against the use of Dr. £ichardson's book in schools.

The half-yearly report of the Taopiri Extended Coal Mining Company shows a net profit for that term of £1594 11s Id. A dividend of Is and a bonus of 36d per share is recommended. The balance of £186 10s 9d is to be carried forward to the new account.

As showing the efficacy of the sanitary measures taken since hut summer, there has been so far only one typhoid case admitted to the Hospital. At this season of the year the Fever Hospital has generally been fully occupied by typhoid patients. WEuLENiiTON, January 25. The Bailey Commission enter upon their duties on Friday, February Ist. In the Divorce Court to-day it was announced that the case of Meagher was settled amicably. In Friebig v Friebig and Oak, a decree absolute was granted. An effort is being made to procure the release of Charles Cheymol, formerly a wine merchant, in Wellington, who was convicted a couple of years ago of falsifying a bond warrant, and sentenced to four years' imprisonment. A petition to his Excellency the Governor, praying for Cheymol's liberation, was circulated today. The grounds on which it sought to enlist vice-regal clemency are:—(l) The prisoner had borne an honest character for 10 years prior to his conviction, and earned the respect of the mercantile community; (2) that the passage of the First Offenders' Probation Act shows that it was the intention of the Legislature that first offenders should be leniently treated whenever possible; (3) that Cheymol was tempted to commit the crime by his distressing financial position; and (4) that the ruin of his business prospects and degradation is sufficient punishment for his offence.

The Public Works Department have decided to connect all Government buildings with a fire brigade station by means of electric fire signals. A fresh difficulty arose in the strike at Hannah's boot factory over the discharge of one of the men, and the operatives who were on strike and intended to return today have gone away again. Kobt. Barter has been committed for trial for illegally pawning JSJ worth of tools lent to him. In the Supreme Court, the action of Cobb and Co. against Messrs Grace and Greenfield, proprietors of the Wellington tramways, concluded at midnight. The jury, after three hours , deliberation, found a verdict for the plaintiffs on the main issue, and awarded £100 damages. NELSON, January 25. In the Supreme Court to-day leave was granted for a new trial in the case of Jones v Anderson, in which plaintiff recently got a verdict for money detained as commission of 5 per cent, and procuration fee by her solicitor. For defendant new evidence is to be produced, showing a press copy of agreement with Mrs Jones, allowing 5 per cent, for procuring loan. Archibald Baird, of Starling, aged twelve, was drowned while bathing in the, lagoon yesterday. It is understood that the Exhibition Commissioners have decided to charge a shilling per foot space.. Twelve thousand acres of Menlove's Windsor Estate were sold for ,£l2 10s per acre. INYEBCABGILL, January 25. An application to remit the rates on the Salvation Army barracks was granted by the Borough Council. An amendment by Councillor Finn, that the rates be charged, was ruled out of order. He said the barracks was not a place of worship but a nuisance. The Mayor and others held that the barracks was clearly a place of; worship.
