GISBORNE, January 24.
In- December, 1887, when an outburst of oil and burning of the derricks in the South Pacific Petroleum Company's well occurred, the boring tools fell to the bottom of the well, and since then this has caused delay in testing the well, but yesterday Mr Weaver, manager, succeeded in recovering the tools, and is proceeding with tests. A meeting of shareholders in the Company is to be held in Sydiiey, on January 30th, to decide what is now to be done.
The man Thompson, who was seized with paralysis at Tologa bay, has died.

Mrs Hodder, aged 79, who arrived here in 1841, died at Greytown this morning. She was well known and highly respected.
The Premier leaves by this afternoon's train for Palmerston en route for Taranaki. He returns to Hawera on Monday, where he addresses his constituents. He will probably be absent for three weeks, and will address meetings at Auckland and Napier.
The Hon. Mr Mitchelson leaves for the North to-morrow morning. Mr Eoberts, President of the New Zealand Exhibition is in Wellington, and is discussing the question with bim and arranging about Government exhibits.
The Minister of Mines received a telegram from Invercargill to the effect that over J2IOOO had been paid in mining fees in connection with the recent tin discoveries at Port Pegasus, Stewart Island.
WESTPOET, January 24.
The Harbor Board accepted the tender of Wilkie Bros, and Wilson, of Wanganui, .£29,371, for Cape Foulwind stone contract.
DUNEDIN, January 24. The city valuation is .£253,860, showing a decrease of .£6189 on last year.
