ROWING NOTES.

By "Kelson." It will be seen by the report of the me«h ing of the Lyttolton Regatta CommitST held on Friday last, that the protS against the Kaiapoi and Avon CmS crews, who finished tirst and seciwi respectively in the Junior Double ScuUsi? the late regatta, were not sustain*? Some of the Committee were of the oplnfoi that the declarations made as to three M the four protested against were not eoffl cient proof as to their but Bni«h when the mothers of the lads wottfden before a Justice of the Peace and take !5 oath, it ought to satisfy them on tfo point, but it certainly hu.% the appeamnea of being against the grain of cbe ftw* people to give a decision against the Lyttelton boys. There is no doubt that after the proofs of age supplied by the two clubs, the majority of persons interests) are fully satisfied that the acted iii the right direction when thai eventually dismissed the protests. ' Satisfactory arrangements having bea made with the Railw.-iy Department tonu an excursion train to Lake Forsyth cm tS Regatta day the date has been deftniteh fixed for Monday, March 18th, that behwi holiday, instead of St. Patrictfeßav which this year falls on a Sunday. Th« Regatta Committee havo been vert prompt in arranging the programme which is similar to that of last year wM the exception that the Champion P&fa' and Senior Double Sculls are open to coi. swainleas boats, and this alteration la a very big bone in the throats of the CbTietchurch rowing men, who have not the same opportunity of learning the art of self-steering as the members of the Wellington clubs, neither &&te they boats in anything like the same street with them, consequently theta has been a considerable amount of growl, ing against the action of the committee, but this I cannot altogether agree with! The Christchurch Regatta Club was formed with the object of advancing scie&Ufiq rowing, and encourage rowing in best aod best boats, and in this direction they an gradually obtaining their aim, but soma contend that the committee should fdvo the interests of the local clubs a preference and insist on boats iv the doubfe-ecdliuis race to carrying a coxswain, and in tbefi event it would probably be the cause ot keeping the Wellington men from competing, which would rob the Regatta of a great deal of extra interest,which certainly is created by theappearanceof ouruorthera rowers at our great aquatic carnival, goitj is to be hopett that, whether the committee have acted rightly or wrojigly, the local men will do their best to assist theraia making the regatta the succeae that their efforts deserve. There are eleven events to be decided, among which is distributed £120 in prizes. The various Christchurch clnbe , efffwe are now setting to work in real earnest, and in this issue will be found the ostites of as many crews as are at present selected. As the regatta is yet two months from being decided, there is pleuty of time for the crews to get into good form, bat some of them will need all the training that the time will allow them to here, The Canterbury Club have selected crewa for all their events, with the exception of the Juniors Fours and Single Semis, bat it is not at all improbable that Laurie «rill have a cut at the latter event if the dab can obtain a boat for him. It is rat&er a peculiar thing that for rear* thiaciab here Been unable to turn out; a tjaesat Junior four crew and it ia quite on tie cards that this year they will be. unrepresented in this race. The Club will b$ strongly represented in the Senior Foots, and Double Sculls, Champion Pa.ln.la&ss Plate, and Maiden Pairs, but- tmt tfe, preeentafcives for other evente. at are considerably below par, bat practice may make an Improvement of a substantia nature by the day of battle. I think that it would have been more in the interests of the club -if, instead of.choo* ing two crews to row off for the honour ol representing their club in the Maldea Sculls, Four, and Junior Sculls, the; should select the best of the sixteen men, and let them be open to be challenged cs on former occasions. ;

The Union Club have again this yeMJW last, to depend muinly on Foster to bring them to the fore, as he is to represent the blue and white in the Senior Fours, Pain, Double Scolls, and Single Sculls, and It la a bit hard on him that he should be mafia the draught horse of the team, when the Club have several members strong and able enongh to represent them as, they have so creditably done on fennel occasions. The Uuion senior erewaare .hardly as well forward as their ffw& across the stream, not having the ad*sa« tage of rowing together in pretioue seasons, but still, when they hare done » few weeks' training together, I maybe inclined to think that they will pte™ very prominent part. The Ladles' Pwfe crew will also be a bit above the average when they reach the post. The crews for the other events should also do credit nf their club, especially the Junior Foot crew, which, after the coaching they are reeeft* ing from one of the older member* of tw club should trouble the othera to Uti them. ' , The Avon Club are well to the fore, m have crews practising for sevenoatot the eleven events on the programme; Bβ four in which they, will be unrepresented being the Senior races. , Their SmiotpspP oared crew is hardly good enough to com* pete with any success against ttxyXjMw* opponents,, but as they, will compete ifl Wβ Ladies' Plate, they should have ft blg&?, as they have always made acrediteHewiow' when pitted aßaitmls the otter M">f second best crews. The Maidens ana Junior are a very sturdy lob, anditisos|y the extra experience, and the proP B ing that the other, cluba' membersßftW« advantage of, that will tell against theau The crews for tho Junior Double ScaUs««» Fours should give a very goad account <k "themselves.
