A deputation from the Discharged Prisoners' Aid Society, in the course of aninterviewwithMrE.C.N.Braddon, Agent-General for Tasmania, denied they had sent discharged prisoners to Australia, as had been several times reported. They had confined their operations to the United States, to which country, it was true, they had despatched a limited number of persons who had completed ten&s of imprisonment.

The Earl of Derby, in the course of a meeting of the Self-help Emigration Society, remarked upon the absolute independence of the working classes in the colonies. "Working men were the masters of the situation. Their position, he assumed, was attributable to the high rate of wages they received, which had the effect of excluding competitors, and in order to balance the position as between capital and labor, he advocated the policy of gradual emigration to the colonies interested in the self-aid system.
