At the Supreme Court to-day, in banco sittings, two cases on appeal came before Mr Justice Gillies. They were in regard to convictions at the Police court against Geo. iicßride, a tailor, who was fined at the Police Court 10a and costs each on two charges of allowing girls in his employ to work in his factory during a meal hour. Mr Hesketh appeared for the appellant, Mcßride, and Mr A. Williamson for the respondent, Sergeant Gimble, the police officer who institated the prosecution- in the Lower Court. Mr Hesketh argued that there was nothing to show that any offence had ; been committed, as it had not been proved tha. Mcßride had given any active consent or permission to the girls to be in the room, and therefore had not "allowed" them. His Honor upheld this objection ' and quashed the first conviction, and the second conviction was also declared bad, on the. ground that the information was not —_icient.
