P_*__tsoa Baldwin.—There waa a very il-Urge attendance yesterday evening—principally outside the gates—at the Agricults-— and Pastoral Association grounds, to wito—3 Prota—or Baldwin's drop from the clouds. So_e two or three thousand per-

seas paid their shillings for admission. ■The inflation of the balloon started at noon a 3in pipe being placed on to then mam on the Lincoln road. The supply of gas, owing to the fact of the •works being some two miles from the _ce_e, only enabled the inflation to -be proceeded with slowly. About 7.30 the balloon was fairly filled with gas, and Professor Baldwin essayed to rise .bat it was evident- that the balloon was not CTpabte of carrying him. The balloon was promptly brought back to the gas supply, but as the heat of the sun had departed the inflation was rendered almost _ipos—ble. Under these circt—_tances Professor Baldwin determined to postpone 'the ascension until Saturday next, and in #rder to prevent any trouble the inflation will oomm_—e at an early hour. -Ms Po—_"B Patent Pin.—Mr Pc__i spool_es to be a benefactor to those who _aye much writing to do. Latterly he has ■been taming his attention to other things than pqlitics, aad with considerable sue.'cess. Po6__.y the reason he has entered upon a new course of study is out of .sympathy with pressmen who have to shed » good deal of ink. Mr Pozzi, doubtless, «e_e_bexed the trouble he gave them last

•year, and has resolved to make some -mends by lightening their labors in future. Bat, whatever has been his motive, be has succeeded in making an invention «•__-_ will save the number of "dips" vh-sh writers need have recourse to in •jfature. Others have attempted something

«4t_—k_ad before, but the pen has been, i «ft: __ as we have seen, in one piece, 1 so when the point has become useless for writing purposeß,the pen, "well,' and all arena—ess. Mr Po__i has got over this di_estty by what seen— to be a simple device. * He has invented a thin piece of flexible steel which can be inserted in the holder with any nib the writer wishes to !UK_ The piece of steel forms with the T—b a " well," which holds a large quantity *<rf ink. By means of this device one can write a page of foolscap without having •X—oorse to the ink bottle. Mr Pozzi on -Tuesday applied for a patent for his invention. We hope that his ingenuity on behalf of the writing community may put g-oaey in his purse. AW—_ CASK.-'-Atthe SupremeCourtyesterday morning, before his Honor Mr just—c Ward, the case of Biraie v Burgess, a •f—endly suit to decide a point in the will •of the late James Birnie, of Kaiapoi I—and, which was partially heard on a previous day, was concluded. _-_L______r's Picnic.—A meeting of milkmen will be held at the Zetland Arms Hotel on tbe 26th instant to arrange the annual picnic.

Paiotui. Ac*_dint. —According to tbe Southland Times the wife of Professor Black met with a painful accident the other day while out in one of the cutters off Stewait Island. By a lurch of the craft she was thrown down so sud .enly and heavily that one of her arms was broken and some of her front teeth knocked out.

A SaiPBOT_—DiO F_—T ON TE— C_TD».— Here is a striking example of our resources for building ships of war:—To the Pairfield ShipbuEWing Company, of Govan, belongs the credit of having built a steamer on the shortest time on record. On July 4th last the Norddeutseher Lloyd telegraphed accepting the Fairfield Company's offer to construct the Dresden, a twin screw steamer of 4500 tons, aa well as a companion ship, the Mnnchen. The keel of the Dresden was laid on July 27th, and on Saturday the vessel was launched, having been built in ninety-eight working days. A Ladt Barrister at Brussels. —A young lady named Mdlle. Popelin, who has passed the law ex___atioua of the University of Brussels, and has been granted her diploma, came before the law courts at Brussels lately, and demanded that her name should be inscribed as a member of the bar. According to Napoleon's decree of 1310, candidates are only admitted by permission of the Procureur-General. The magistrate declared that he could not grant the request, as the law did not allow of her admission. Two advocates —M. Guillery, an eminent member of the Brussels bar, and a young advocate, M. Frank—tried to prove that legally Mdlle. Popelin was able to plead and act as a lawyer. This is the first time (the Doily News correspondent thinks) such a question has arisen in Europe. The case will be soon decided. T__ Limitation op M_jr_iaoe.—The old rhyme runs, " The good or the ill of all a man's life, is the good or ill choice of his good or ill wife," and if for man read woman, and for wife husband, the adage is as true. Yet there i 3 no contract into which people habitually enter with so little thought for their own future health and happiness, and for the moral and physical welfare of their possible Offspring. There are legislators in Kentucky, however, who, if the Medical Record of New York correctly states the effect of a bill introduced into the local legislature, are before their times. This bill would prohibit marriage with an idiot, lunatic, pauper, vagrant, tramp, gambler, felon, or any person rendered physically helpless or unfit for the marriage relation, or any person with a violent temper, or who has, within one year, been a frequenter of any immoral house.— British Medical Journal.

Some Stdt Fbicks fob Stamps.—Encouraged by the success of a recent sale, undertaken by Messrs Yentom, Bull and Cooper, the well-known auctioneers, Old Jewry, on tbe initiative of several members of the London Philatelic Society, the firm named will in future hold periodical sales of a similar character. Mr Thomas Bull, who conducted the auction, writes: — " There was a large attendance of buyers, and the competition was very spirited. Itmay interest some of your readers to learn the prices obtained for some of the rarer varieties. The blue block Cape error, _£15; the Lady McLeod" Trinidad local, J-18 13s; the 3-lire Tuscany on the original envelope, .£l2 12s; the New Brunswick Is, __5; Nova Scotia __, _ _ ss; the Id black Great Britain with V.R. in corner, -35 15s. All the colonial stamps realised good prices, Bhowi-_u_r that the interest in varieties has largely increased." Stb_ngi Conduct op a Coboneb.—An extraordinary report comes from Wentworth, New South Wales. It appears that a man named Robert Stewart was drowned at Golgol, 26 mil— from Went-, worth, on December 29th, and the body was recovered next day. The district coroner, Mr W. J. Holding, did not hold an inquest until Monday, January 14th, when the inquiry was conducted with closed doors, the press being excluded. The medical examination of the body was made, and after the case had closed; but before the Court rose, two witnesses de aired to give evidence, pointing to suspicion Of violence, the face of the deceased having been disfigured, as if by a blow from a bottle. The deceased and a man named . Reilly had crossed the river Murray in a boat, and were returning when Reilly alleges that the boat capsized and the deceased were drowned. Reilly made several contradictory statement.. The boat was found right side up. The people of Golgol were indignant, and they met and passed a resolution to the effect that the Minister of Justice be asked to remove Mr Holding from his position as Coroner. Ma O'Bsibn's Sentiments.—The following is a passage from the article in United Ireland ior which the editor, Mr W. O'Brien, M.P., was called before the TimesParnell Commission:—" The time has come for very plain speaking on the subject of these forgeries. The Commission has now been sitting for twenty-seven days in London without getting much nearer to the subject which the public understands it was specifically appointed to investigate. So far the evidence has been a meaning!—s parade of eight-year old outrages, from all participa„on in which the victims themselves examined for the forger concur in emphatically exonerating the League. The Court has been cumbered with files of old newspapers, and stunned with the opinions of policemen, land grabbers, evictors, and one tuft-hunting Catholic clergyman, i b_j»v God, there is but one in all Ireland to be found in such company. As to the condition of the country and its causes, it is true that the waste of time has been in some measure redeemed by the open exposure of the methods of bribery and intimidation by which ' the forger and the Government combined are desperately struggling to escape out of the horrible mess which they have landed themselves. On all this black business we claim our right of free comment and open exposure. We have no intention of waiting until the forger gives us leave to speak. With all respect to the Court we do not care twopence for the opinion of the three judges, specially selected in the teeth of a justly indignant public, to protect the forgers and their friends and accomplices."
