THE NEW JUDGE.

ißt Telegraph.] [tbom ottb correspondent.] DUNEDIN, January 22. Discussing the judicial appointment, the Times says:—"We are not aware whether a particular person or set of persons is held responsible for the clamor issued from a section of the bar and press in favor of the appointment of Mr Justice Ward. If all clamorera were friends of the acting judge he has much need to be delivered from his friends. Proceeding as it did from an intelligent section of the community, it was one of the most indecent outbursts of opinion we have ever known in New Zealand. We do not hesitate to assert that if no other reason • existed against the permanent appointment of Mr Justice Ward, the fact that tbe appointment was hotly demanded by a section of persons who would have to practice under him, or who in the ordinary course might be concerned in cases coming before him, was amply sufficient to justify his exclu sion. It would be a sorry day for New Zealand that should witness judicial appointments extorted rather than bestowed. Returning to Mr Denniston, we heartily congratulate him on his appointment, which we trust may prove one as beneficial to the public aa it is honorable to himself. We may fairly hope the sense of responsibility will exercise upon Mr Denniston the same transforming influence it has often wrought upon less promising material." The Star admits Mr Denniston during practice has occasionally displayed warmth of temper not consistent with the judicial mind, and was wont to throw himself personally into his cases to a degree whicn sometimes disturbed the decorum of the inferior Courts; but thinks that it has now disappeared, and hopes his administration and bearing in his high office may justify the choice of the Cabinet and realise the anticipations of his friends.
