CHATHAM ISLANDS.

TO THE EDITOR OF THB PRESS. Sir,—l notice in your paper to-day a meeting of the Caledonian Society re Crofters. I would suggest that park of the Chatham Island be purchased by the Government of New Zealand. The present leases of a great portion of land is about expiring, Iwould recommend the Government or friends of crofters to purchase these leases and place, say, families on 100 acres each family. They would then be placed upon their natural homesteads of peat country for fuel and agricultural, with any amount of fishing grounds, a thousand or two families could be placed there at once, and no burden to anyone. As the clearances required are nothing, the timber on the ground would all be required for firewood and fencing, and I am perfectly confident that if the Caledonian Society put their shoulder to the wheel in this case, that they would do a great good to the crofter cause, and be a success and a benefit to the New Zealand Government, and a great increase to the present Government revenue.—Yours, &c, H. McLkllan.
