WAKANUI RIVER BOARD.
A special meeting of the Wakanui River Board was held on Saturday. Present— Messrs J. Brown, T. Clephane, E. Thomas, J. Wilson, and M. Wilson. MrT. Clfephane was, elected Chairman in place of Mr James Brown, who had resigned. An offer from Messrs Fooks and Son to do the clerical work of the Board for the sum of £5 a year was accepted. The report of the Works' Committee was read, but not adopted. A number of accounts were passed for payment, Mr Brown protesting against the payment of one account which he /alleged Mr Clephane bad Incurred without the sanction of the Boa*(L Mr E. Thomas tendered his resignation as a member of the Works' Committee. A letter was read from Messrs Wilding and Lewis to the effect that tbe Board would be held responsible for any damage caused to Mr Meredith Wilson's property if the River Board gave permission to take water of. the river at a certain point. Messrs Fooks and Son were appointed Treasurers to the Board. Some discussion ensued as the erection of a bank for protective purposes. Mr Wilson complained that the river bank had been tampered with to the injury ot private property, and moved—"That the Board take what steps it thought necessary in the matter." The motion was seconded fey Mr Brown, pro forma. Considerable discussion ensued, out the motion was allowed to lapse without being pat to the vote.
The new railway from Tientien to Tung Chow is affirmed to havereceivedlmperial sanction. . Work on it is likely shortly.
