Great interest centred in the match between the Native team and Northamptonshire, which was played on Saturday afternoon, October 6th, at Franklin's Gardens, Northampton, and resulted in the defeat of the home team by two goals, four tries, and three minors to nothing. Although the afternoon was cold and threatening, upwards of 4000 people witnessed the game. ' The 'Maoris made four changes in the team which defeated Surrey, whilst Northamptonshire, was re* presented by anything but a strong fifteen, and it was apparent from the first bow the game would go. In the first half they stuck gamely to their work, but on changing over they fell off considerably, doubtless owing to want of condition and practice. Their opponents played throughout with much dash and skill, dribbled with judgment and passed quickly,, although not at all times accurately. In j the few packs which resulted they always held their own, and it is evident, with a little more finish, they will make a very formidable combination. Rutherford, for Northants, kicked off slightly down hill, and Burgess on the ball coming back kicked with judgment. Taiaroa having shown up prominently, Elliott dashed up one of the wings, and Keogh immediately after ran in from the home- 5 ' twenty-five.' M'Causland failed .-at the place after a bout of even play, in which the home men did fairly wen. Madigan from a pass by Wynyard crossed his opponents lines, and M'Causland kicked the goal. From this stage until half-time nothing further was scored, although the home men were once or twice severely pressed, owing to the determined and frequent rushes of their opponents, who were quick oif-the ball ana difficult to hold when in fall swing. On changing ends the Colonials bad ft much their own way", and were In their opponents' half the greater portion of the time. Soonafterthere-s tart, Elliott.who was always prominent, got over, and McCausland placed a splendid goal amidst cheers from near the quarter-nag. After a little fast play In Northamptonshire territory Elliott -again got in, but nothing resulted from McCausland's kick. During the remaining few minutes Karaurai and Madigan obtained tries, but McCausland failed to convert, and the game resulted as above stated. Three minors were also scored against the county. Elliott and Madigan oehind and Taiaroa in front were very prominent throughout.- For tbe home players Robinson did well at back, and Mead also showed form, but there was little or no combination.
