WELLINGTON MUSICAL FESTIVAL.
.. •—-"♦"■ —~ -■ ■■■■ [FROM OtTR CORRESPONDNET. ] WELLINGTON, November 26. A most successful rehearsal was held to-night for the musical festival. A large audience was admitted by payment, and great enthusiasm was displayed. The choruses in "Elijah" and "Lohengrin" went -with grand effect, and the solo singing was exceptionally good. Mis 3 Spensley again created a furore, and Herr PuscheU, the Christchurch tenor, who made his first appearance, was hailed as the finest yet heard here. His solos were vociferously applauded. Mr Prouse, the Wellington baritone, was also in splendid form, and all promisee well for the performance of " Elijah." This afternoon a concert of classical chamber music was given, and was well attended. The following pieces were admirably played:—Mozart's trio, for pianoforte and strings (violins), by Messrs Parker ( Wellington), Skelfcon and Bowman (Christchurch); Beethoven's Quartette No. 5, Op. 18, by Messrs Coombs (Dunedin), Isherwood (Palmerston), Bowman (Christ church), and Hamerton (Wellington); Schubert's impromptus in E flat and A flat, for piano, by Miss Black (Wellington); and Schubert s quintette, by Miss Williams, Mr Boy d, and Hr Hamerton (all of Wellington), and Messrs A. and W. Bowman, of Christchurch. The playing of Mr Coombs, the Dunedin violinist, was much admired. The vocal numbers were a duet by Schachner, sung by Mrs Levin (Wellington) and Mr Izard (Chrifitchurch). Blumenthal's " Evening Song," superbly given by Eerr Puschell, the Christchurch tenor, was enthusiastically encored. There is' a great rash for seats on the ; " Golden Legend " night.
