Drunkenness.—For a flrat offence a man was fined 5s or, in default, the usual alternative.
Boy Thieves. — John Gray (15) and Edward Hobbs (13) pleaded guilty to stealing eight pocket-Knives, valued at Bs, the property of Wm. Gardiner, on. September 17th. Detective Doolan said there were other charges of a similar nature pending against them. They had, for previous offences, been convicted and birched. They were now sentenced to receive each twelve strokes of a birch rod, and to be imprisoned for seven Hays. Also, to be brought up on the other charges when the police were ready. Alfred Genet (Iβ) was charged with stealing two books valued at 2s, the property of John Pullen, on September 18th, and with stealing £1 12s from Arthur Partridge on August 18th. On the application of the police, he was remanded till Monday. Civil Cases.—McFarlane v Barrett, claim £2 5s for rent; judgment for plaintiff, with costs. Judgments went for plaintiffs by default, with costs, in Williams and Milton v Manghan, £3 17s 2d; Hegarty v Barry. 4s 6d; Same v Hunt, 6s 8d ; Klingenstein v Jones, £26 Is 10d; Allen v Taylor, 14s; and Le Masurler and Co. v T. Tread well, senr., £1 14a. Whittington v Beavens and McFadden v Smith were adjourned till September 27th.
