• The fortnightly meeting was held on Tuesday." Present—The Mayor (Mr Hanaen). Cra,- May, Kidd, Feldwick, Fraser, •ndStanto—. Having made thedeclaration, the newly-elected members of the Council, Messrs Doubleday, Blakely and Wearing too— their seats. ' Letters were read — from Mr J. Holland,- stating that <a tom_t*?C' over the ' embankment to ■his land was too steep. The Chairman o£ Works Committee said it liad cost —9, and Mr Holland did not seem to meet the Council. Referred to Works Committee. From J. and B. Ross, for extension of time to finish eastern em____ment, Granted. From Hon. E. Richardson, in reference to petition for .openings in railway line on Irishman's Flat, stating he was awaiting return of . .Minister ofWorks to go into the whole iCnatter, as well as Mr J. Andrews'petition. ;Cr. Fraser moved, Cr. May seconded— "That __r Richardson be thanked." Carried. - From Secretary Fire Brigade, for two long service medals. Referred to Fire Prevention Committee. The Clerk reported on -works in hand, and that a cargo of timber Jh&d arrived by vessel for Mr F. Robins, which it "was considered better to cart from below bridge than openit. Adopted. The receipts for fortnight were ; ._S3 7s, 'present overdraft £1180 7s sd. .Accounts £3416s 3d were passed. In the election of S_u_ling Oomjhtttee, Cr. Feldwick moved —~" That Crs. Wearing, Kidd, and May _3nairm_n) Works Committee." Cr. 'Doubleday moved -.names of Crs. StanIton, Blakeley, .and Kidd (Chairman). Amendment lost. Cr. Doubleday then •moved for Crs. Stanton, Wearing, and Kidd (Chairman). Second amendment lost. Cr. Blakeley moved for Crs. .Wearing, Doubleday, and May (Chair_oanL This amendment was lost, and the motion carried, Crs. Doubleday and -Stanton voting against it. Cr. May moved "That Crs. "Feldwick, Blakeley and Fraser ir__.n) be the Finance Committee." Cr. Douhleoay moved " That Cr. Blakeley be the Chairman." Not to re-elect him .•man:ntedto a slur," and the arrangement t<— the Committee, he complained, seemed ■tobe a foregone conclusion. Cr. Stanton 'endorsed the remarks. Cr. Wearing hoped -the Mayor would rule that the word "slur" should oe withdrawn. Cr. Feldwick had .understood Cr. Blakeley could seldom attend the Committee, and it had been apparent that when asked in reference to matters connected with his Committees he was not able to give the Council the tbsired information. Cr. Blakeley interjected that Cr. Feldwick -was drawing upon his imagination. Cr. j Sekiwkk stated he was stating facts. Cr. Kidd objected to the use of language which cast any reflection on Councillors. Cr. _tonbleday said he had gathered early -that day that these Committees were . being packed. The Mayor said he thought t_ela_guage of Cr. Doubleday was not of an objectionable nature. Cr. Blakeley said if Cr. Wearing, who was of the same quick temperament as himself, had been placed in the position of being pat off a Committee or reduced, he would | "have felt a slur. As to Cr. Feldwick's ob- . jection to h was all moonshine. 'No Councillor bad given more time or sat ■ oftener than he had, and after the gratuitous remarks made the Council had better remove his name altogether. Cr. Wearing thought it a J tery funny idea that a man should wish ito keep to one office year after year. He • believed the Mayor, if appealed to, would • not care about it. The Mayor—" Certainly sot. I should not like to have to remain in .---'this chair year after year." Cr. Wearing went on to remark that it struck him Cr. Blakeley was somewhat greedy for office. The amendment was lost, and Tt_emotion carried, Crs. Blakeley, Stanton, and Double—ay voted No. Crs. Humphreys 'and Blakeley (Chairman) were elected -members of the Sanitary and Cemetery " Committee, Cr. Stanton indignantly declining to act. Crs. Doubleday, Humphreys and Feldwick (Chairman) were elected the Lighting and Fire Pre—ention Committee; Crs. Feldwick and Fraser Cheque Signing Committee. Mr W. S. Ivens was appointed Banger, it being understood be should attend to his duties specially on Sundays. :On motion of Cr. Wearing it was resolved ; the Clerk get out sizes and quantities of timber for suspension bridge repairs, so .that the same might be tendered for by the local carpenters. Cr. Doubleday "moved—"That the Council instruct the • Clerk to attend the office at office hours, and in his absence during those hours he place notice on the premise—" Cr. Stanton seconded. Crs. Wearing and Fraser objected to the motion, as the matter could _ nave been met without it. They pointed . out that no neglect of duties could be alleged. Cr. Doubleday said all be wished to do was to prevent inconvenience to persons calling repeatedly at the office. The motion was negatived, and the Council adiourned.
