Senator Sherman's proposition to promote the amicable settlement of existing difficulties between tha United States and Canada has been brought forward with the view to smoothing to ultimate absorption of Canada by the States. !

Senator Sherman, in the course of a speech, in moving the motion of which he gave notice a day. or two ago, said America ought to make overtures to Canada for a political and commercial union with the United States.
