AUCKLAND, September 18. The Birkenhead and Northcote fruie growers have formed a Company for the manufacture of preserves. Spaulding, who fired the building at fiemuera Dairy about three years ago, made his escape from the Lonatxc Asylum between two and three o'clock yesterday morning, and is at large. On the Colonial Secretary visiting the Asylum a few days ago he saw Spaalding, and asked him what he would do if he were sent away from the Asylum. Spaulding said he would make a public stawmentas to how things were conducted at the Asylum. He haa kept a diary of all that has taken place. He escaped by unscrewing the fastening of the window and lowering himself by sheets. Messrs West Bros.' sawmill at Helfinsville was totally destroyed by fire at an early hour on Sunday morning. The loss is w£lsoo, of which amount they are only covered by an insuranoe of i}4oo in the Colonial. The origin of the fire is unknown.

WATPAWA, September 18. T he prospectus of the Waipawa Industrial and Art Exhibition has just been issued, in which exhibits are invited from all over the colony. The Minister for Public Works has ordered all exhibits to be carried free on the New Zealand Bailway lines, and the Union Steamship Company will carry them for freight one way. Everything points to the Exhibition being a great success. The opening day will be a general holiday with special trains, children's fete and so on. The buildings are now in course of erection, and the grounds are all marked off, wherein are to be displayed the nonperishable goods. All the leading gentlemen of Hawke's Bay are down as patrons of the show. . WELLINGTON, September 18.

The barque Kate Tathaoi, which was floated off the rocks near Wairau Biver, and taken to Port Underwood to be beached for repairs prior to coming to Wellington, was taken too high up, and some difficulty in getting her off is anticipated. The Englishmen got .£7O for the football match at Wairarapa. The Hon. Mr Hislop, who left for the South yesterday, returns shortly to take up his permanent residence in Wellington. Mr Westgarth has for ally written to the Government concerning his proposal for Joint Colonial TWee per Cent. Loans, and the matter will be considered by the Cabinet.

The Eailway Commiasionership still remains in abeyance, but the Premier states that it will probably be settled definitely in a short time.

HOKITTKA, September 18.

In the Supreme Court in the case of Hazel" against the Greymouth Borough Council, for obstructing a bridge over the Grey at Cobden, the plaintiff was nonsuited, as the obstruction was caused by the Harbor Board. The sittings will probably close to-morrow. OAMAETJ, September 18. A woman named Margaret Wilson was brought before the E.M. this morning charged with stealing, on the 15th inst., a dress valued at MH 10a, ths property of Janet Oliver, of Dunedin. The accused was remanded until to-morrow. DUNEDIN, September 18. A miner named Delaney was killed in his claim at Waitahuna by a fall of earth. The Colonial Secretary's visit is in connection with the Seacliffe Asylum. A son of Mr A. J. Burns, of Dunedin, has obtained the degree of Doctor at the Edinburgh University.
