DIOCESAN SYNOD.

• Friday, August 31. AFTERNOON SESSION. The Primate took his seat at 4 p.m. The Rev. F. Ksowles read the following resolution passed by the Committee of the Church Work Society, in reference to a question asked by Mr Fryer:—"The Committee having taken into consideration the motion that a statement of assets and liabilities of the Book Depot be laid on the table of Synod, resolve that they are unable to do so, for the reason that the Depot is worked with funds supplied, not by the Synod, but by the shareholders, and that the Synod is not responsible in any way for the finance of the Book Depot, although it is worked for convenience by a Committee, part of which only is elected the motion of Canon Cotteri-I-, it was decided that a copy of the resolutlor. be inserted in the minutes. The Dean moved—" That the thanks of the Synod be given to the Rev J. W. Stack for the sermon preached by him at the service held at the Cathedral on Tuesday evening, August 28th. and that the editors of the New Zealand Church l\ews be requested to publish the sermon in that paper as soon as may l>e convenient. Yen. Archdeacon Dudley seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Mr J. Baldwin moved —"That the Synod go into Committee*— consider the accounts laid on the table." The motion was seconded by Mr P. J. Fryer, and after a brief discussion was carried. The Synod went into Committee, and On resuming at 5.45 p.m. Mr G. Dunnage moveS—" That, with a view of considering the advisability of amalgamating pan.—es when cures become vacant, thereby lessening the expense of Church administration and of making more adequate provision for the incumbents of cures, the Standing Committee be asked to prepare a return for §resenta tion at the next meeting of the ynod, showing what parishes have been subdivided during the last ten years and new parishes constituted; the amount of indebtedness, and the cost of Working each parish at the time of severance; also the liabilities and the cost of working the several parishes at the present time." Mr J. M. Batham seconded the motion. After some discussion, Archdeacon Harper pointed out that the Standing Committee had already considered the question of amalgamating country cures, so that it would oe seen the matter was now before them. He suggested that Mr Dunnage should withdraw his motion. The motion was withdrawn, and the Synod adjourned at 6 p.m., and resumed at 7.30 p.m. EVENING SESSION. On the President's motion, the Synod proceeded to ballot for the members of a Committee to report upon the question in dispute between the Church Property Trustees and the debenture holders. It was agreed that the Committee consist of seven members. Eighteen nominations were received, and the ballot resulted in the following being elected :—Revs. J. W. Stack and J. 08. Hoare, and Messrs C. Whitefoord, P. J. Fryer, J. M. Batham, J. Grigg, and the Hon. H. B. Gresson. The Synod at 10.45 p.m. adjourned till 4 p.m. on Monday.
