Tarawera, Captain Sinclair, arrived yesterday morning at nine o'clock from Melbourne, via Hobart and 'South. Mr Munro (purser) reports ■— Left Melhourne at 1.15 p.m. on 21st inst., called at Hobart,, and arrived at the Bluff at 3 pan. on 26th inst.; left again at R. 15 p.m. on 27th, and arrived at Dunedin at 8 a.m. on 28th inst.; left again at 5 p.m. on 29th inst, for Lyttelton, arriving as above. Experienced strong ■westerly gale, with heavy seas, to the Bluff; thence to arrival fine weather. She steamed for Wellington, Napier, Auckland, and Sydney last night. The Union Steamship Company's s.s. Mawhera, Captain Hill, arrived yesterday rooming at an early hour from GreyH-outh. Mr Morley, purser, reports leaving Greymouth at 2 a.m. on 28th inst. for Lyttelton, arriving as above. Experienced strong westerly gales to Cape -Jurewell, thence to arrival fine weather. The Union Steamship Company's a.s. Penguin, Captain Allman, from Nelson, Picton, and Wellington arrived yesterday morning at six o'clock. Mr Morris (purser) reports:—-Left Nelson at 1 p.m. on 28th inst., called at Picton and WeDington, leaving the latter port at 2 p.m. on Wednesday for Lyttelton, arriving as above. Experienced tine weather throughout the trip. At 3.30 p.m. she steamed for Dunedin. ' The ketch Clematis, in ballast, for Havelock, sailed yesterday morning. The barque Kentish Lass, with a full cargo of produce, sailed for Auckland yesterday morning. The schooner Mimiha, in ballast, for Havelock, sailed yesterday morning. As the s-s. Jane Douglas was coming alongside the screw pile jetty yesterday afternoon a squall struck her and canted ter bow against the piles, carrying away the bobstay and smashing the jibboom. The schooner Orpheus loads produce at this port for Auckland. Ih ballast, for Stewart's Island, the schooner Maud Graham cleared at the Customs yesterday. The Colonial Union Company's s.s, Bayiey goes alongside the ship Lady to-day to receive frozen mutton, aome 8000 carcases, which have been stored on that vessel. The N.Z.S. Company's RJULS. Ruapehu from Port Chalmers is due here this morning. Mr G. H, Humphries, who for sometime has been purser of the s.s. Tarawera, was, the last trip of the steamer, left at Melbourne for treatment. He is suffering from a severe cold. Mr Munro, of the E.S. Mawhera, has taken his place. The rjarque Lutterworth, which arrived -at Port Chalmers on August 28th, met wish some bad weather after rounding the Cape of Good Hope on July 28th, in lat. 43 S., when she met a succe«-sion of furious gales from W.N.W. toS.&W., with terrific seas, which continued until August 9th, her decks being continually n*-*oded. On August Bth, whilst running before a furious W.S.W. gale, a tremendous sea .broke over the ship, carrying away three of her boats, skids, Hooding her cabin, smashing pooprail, after hatch, also the only remaining boat, and doing other damage about the decks. From August 9th to the 20th, she had more moderate weather, although she met occasional heavy Iv.E. gales. Crossed the meridian of Cape Leuwin on Au_-ust ICth, in lat. 49 S., and when in lat. 52 S., long. 140 E., heavy N.W. and S.W. gales set in, wita very high sea; passed the island of Tasmania on 'August 22nd; strong N.W. and E.W. gales continued until she made her -first land fall (the Snares) on the 25th Inst, The New Zealand Shipping Company's Ship Opawa, now discharging at the Gladstone Pier, will, on completion, be docked.
