DEATH OF LECTURER.
At the (rood age of twenty-fire years the death of Lecturer took place in Jane at Lansdown Park, near Bath, from rupture . of the diaphragm. Hfs name recalls-mem-ories of that exciting and eventful epoch of turf history known as the "Hastings era," when the Danebury stable, with the late John Day at its head, achieved some notable triumphs, and when; ho horses trianed there were often made the medium of heavy and sensational wagering. The Cesarewitch victory df Lecturer in 1886 was one of the most memorable, for many reasons, in the history of the race, and a great stake was won oh the occasion by his owner, the late Marquis of Hastings (though he ran in the name of his nominator, Mr H Wilkinson) and those connected, with the Danebury establishment. Accustomed as a later generation of turf men have become to the marvellous performances of racehorses under heavy weights, the 7st 31b carried in the Cesarewitch by Lecturer does not seem nowadays a big burden for a three year old over a coarse of two miles and a quarter, but it was con eidered a notable exploit at that time, and, it must be remembered that soma- of his opponents had been very highly tried.. and that the winner was a somewhat small horse. The sterling staying" qualities of Lecturer did not desert him as a four year old, and he had a field of good qualitiy behind him when he carried off the Ascot Cup in 1807, further confirmation, being given when he won the Alexandra Plate the following day. Other evepta over a distance of ground fell to his share the same year, at the expiration of which he was put to the stpd. As a stallion, however, he was nob a conplcnous success, those only of his progeny wJio made «o£ thing like a name for Harriet Laws (winner of the Nertbrtntag and Plate in 1875), and C*V*s& a** among other events won the «»«J*gk j n Cap m 1873. « te ljWorS end Apology, Splnaway, jn aS63 oy the late Sir Tattoo out
