Ybstebdat's Parliamrnt. .-!-, In the Legislative Goaneil yesterday the report of the Conference of managers on the Chinese Immigration Bill was brought up. A compromise bad been arrived at with the Lower House and the report was A message was received from the House, of Representatives disagreeing with the amendments in the Native Land Court Act Amendment Bill and Native Land Frauds Prevention Bill. These will be discaesed af a conference to be heJdthiß morning. The Council threw out the New Plymouth Hospital Bill and Epsom and Mount Eden Ground and Gravel Pit Eeserve Bill. In the House of Bepresentatives several local Bills were dealt with. The report of the Conference on the Chineee Bill was agreed to. The Eoad Boards Act. Amendment BilL the Naval and Military Settlers and Volunteers Land Bill were read a a third time and passed. A Bill giving compensation to l£r Jones, iif Hcftatt-fame, was read a second time. On the third reading of the Appropriation Bill, member 3 followed to the full their usual custom of criticising the Government and addressing their $ironga, the medium of Hansard. Sir BJ.. The San Fbancisco Mail Service. — Private information was received in Christchurch yesterday that the American Government were favorable to increasing their contribution to the San Francisco mail service by .£IO,OOO. This may have been brought about by the Canadian Government endeavoring to arrange with one <>i the large Scotch steamboat lines to run through to the East via Vancouver. Wateb Racks.—The Selwyn County Council Jias annexed part of the Ricearton Listrict to the Waimakariri water-race listrict. Mr Davies has been instructed o construct a race through the Burnham School reserve, as -well as to make one for ;he benefit of Mr Hall and others in the ricinity of Harewood road. Traction Engines.—At its meeting yeserday the Selwyn County Council passed iinended by-laws for the regulation of the ise of traction engines. The confirmation if the laws will be made at the next >rdinary meeting, and in the meantime ihe owners of traction engines will have in opportunity afforded them of perusing ;he proposals. The Selwyn County Council, to vhom the application was made, decided ;hat it was not advisable to increase the lumber of houses in that district. It was ilso stated by the Inspector that a yard in ;he same district over whioh the Council iad no control was not so clean as it might :>e. Cableton.—On Friday evening the Rev. C. J. Pendray gave a lecture called "A iVord in Season to Lads and Lasses." The ecture was full of good advice and aurasng anecdotes, and was received with great nterest by those present. A dialogue, " A Wif e's Mistake," was also given in spirited style by Misses Horn, Bailly and Baxter md Messrs Dalley and Tewens. Several selections of music were sung in an excelent manner by the choir. Mutual Improvement ABBociation.-t----rhe Mutual Improvement Association in jonnection with the United Methodist Free Church, St. Asaph street, held their meeting' on Thursday night last, instead of Friday. The subject for the evening was m essay on " Popular Delusions," by Hflr Hople. The essay, whicn was of considerable length, contained great deal of information, and criticised by I<he members. Street Accident.—A cab. horse belonging to Mr Haggie djed suddenly last night. It was being driven in a hansom by Harry Jpnes from' the stand opposite Warner's Hotel, southward along Qoloiribo street. When opposite Hereford street the animal stumbled and fell- The harness and cab, which were not damaged, were removed and the horse examined. It was found to be quite dead, and was placed in the side channel until its removal later on. Dbattghts.—A draughts match, played last nisht between teams from the Irisb. Rifles and City Guards. There yere eight men aside, and four games were played at each board, the Rifles proving victorious by nine games. A match was also played between nine men. from Messrs Toomer Bros., and a similar number from the Ohrisfcchurch Eifles, fonr games at each board. The former team won seventeen, games, drew five, and lost fourteen, thus scoring a rather close win by three games. St. John Ambulance Association. — In our advertising columns will be found a notification of the dates of the nursing class examination, viz., Monday. September 10th, 4 p.m., at the City Council Library for the written part, and Tuesday, September 11th, 3.15 p.m. for tne oral and practical part, at the Hospital, by Dr. Guthrie. The fourth lecture of the course will take place at 3 p.m. to-day, at the Hospital. Dr. Dβ Benzie has also kindly undertaken to give two extra lectures on Thursday and Friday this week at 3 p.m., for candidates for examination only. Motett Societt.—A very good concert was given last night in the St. Michael's schoolroom, under the conductorship of Mr Pooley, in aid of the funds of £he Motett Society. Several selections -were well rendered by the orchestra, which also accompanied two motetts, one of which, composed by Mr Pooley, went exceptionally well. The, programme also included a piano solo and several aonge, that tjy Mi H. Ogier being encored. Another item which was much appreciated was a olarionette solo by Master D. Sinclair, entitled Scotch airs, with variations, which was loudly redemanded. There was a good audience, whe were most enthusiastic throughout with their applause. Oust —On Friday evening last the Band of Hope mustered largely in the Presbyterian Church, over fifty children being present. The Rev. D. Rodger presided. During the evening several saored songs were sung, and recitations given by Mary Murray, Alice Cromie, James Osborn, William Livingstone and William Wells, and afterwards a brief address by Mr Meredith. At 8 o'clock there was a very fair attendance to hear the Rev. D. Rodger deliver his second lecture on the Scottish worthies. This time his subject was "George Wisharfc." The lecture was listened to moat attentively by those present, and at the close a very hearty vote of thanks was given to Mr Rodger as an expression, of approval and appreciation of his efforts. West Christchubch School Committee. —At a special meeting held on Tuesday evening it was decided, after receiving the reports of members and the head master as to the sale of tickets, that the entertainment in aid of the prize fund on. Friday next should take place at the Oddfellows' Hall. LichSeld street, and a varied and excellent programjne was drawn up, consisting of instrumental selections by the Addingtoa Workshops Band, part songa by the school children, and duets, songs and humorous recitations by several ladies and gentlemen. It was also decided t<? arrange with, the Tramway Company for a special tram to Addington after the entertainment.
