THE IRONY OF FATE.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE PBESS. Sik, —During the severe " keel-hauling" which we poor New Zealand colonists are Undergoing at the hands of the English financial papers, it may be as well to remember that, though the .atest cause for the outpouring of the vials of paternal wrath may very possibly arise in great measure from the decision of our leading financial institution to withhold a dividend from its shareholders, yet the cause which necessitated that wise decision arose from circumstances outside of our colony. New Zealand, as a colony, cannot fairly bo held responsible for losses arising in other colonies, and though we have done much to merit the name of spendthrifts, yet in this case we are suffering for the shortcomings of others. Let this fact be fairly represented and recognised at home, and the blame individualised, so that New Zealand, our home and colony, may be absolved from all unmerited opprobrium.—Yours, &c, Colonist.
