RICCARTON NOTES.

A beautiful morning on Saturday and the tracks in capital order was just the thing for some of those winding up gallops which trainers administer to their charges a day or two before a big meeting. Nelson was the first to go. and in a strong gallop he was attended by Regina and Bronte, who both had enough of it in a short time trying to foot it with the crack. Still Regina showed more pace for a certain distance than I, for one, should have credited her with. Cruchfield had Red Ensign for a companion, but neither of them can be placed iv the first class. Torrent went alone, aud made " blow" enough about it. O'Brien sent Gipsy King and Sextant a good rousing gallop together, both pulliug up well. Hermitage was unattended in his work, aud sundry racecourse goers say that after all he is , tho " Simon Pure " of the lot. Isaac was brushed up at the finish of his work by Rose and Black. Artillery, who has come to life again, had a couple of rounds at a fair pace with Secretary, and showed no symptoms of soreness. Tit Bit was started off for a mile and a half gallop, and Adulation was despatched to the half mile post to join him in a.stretch home. Tit Bit, however, at the top of the course broke a blood vessel in the head, and after staggering for some distance fell, and unfortunately George Williams, who was riding him, did not get clear of the horse, and suffered rather a severe squeezing from the fall. He was carried in, and a conveyance obtained to take him home, and Dr. Prins was soon in attendance, and the latest bulletin was favorable to the injured jockey. Clifford jumped off Adulation to assist his brother professional, and the filly got away from him, but was fortunately caught before she had done herself any more harm than a riderless gallop of half a mile or so. Carbine and vandal worked on the grass, as did Manton later on. All these went sound, but perhaps will be seen to better advantage later on. Goodman mounted Sommeif himself, and gave him two separate half-mile flutters. He has begun to develope symptoms of temper. The others of nls team did good work. Silver Mark, In company with the Bard, and that good little mare Apropos alone going very strongly and well. Moana galloped fairly well. Ruby and his brother, Springston, jumped off together, and, after going a mile, were joined by Vault-ess. Ruby was pulled off at the lower turn, aud the other two went another circuit. Mr Stead's team were on the ground, but I failed to see Maxim. Lochiel, however, with a bandage on one foreleg and a boot on the other did a half- j pace circuit with Beresford, and Chic did j moderate work. The Dunedinites—St. ! Clair, St. Ives aud Mokoia—though on the course, were not extended, but will be sent along this afternoon. St Clair is not an attractive animal, and Mokoia looks not quite as well as I should like. After breakfast the hurdle race contingent did steady work,.as also did Pile-row's, but there was nothing sensational in it. Chudleigh, Exchange, Ravenswing, and Parvula came down the grass best pace in pairs. Exchange shows a lot of temper, but has grown into a fine big colt. Ravenswing is a quality looking filly, but might have a bit moro size. The same remarks apply to Chudleigh. Brian Boru, who looked as lanky as ever, was galloped twice round attended by Forward for one circuit. He will probably break in two pieces if given similar work very often. Patrician, Tyrant, and numerous other of the outside division were exercised during the morning. ,* Hermit,
