FATE OF THE IMPRISONED t PERSONS. i DUNEDIN, Monday, 1 a.m. In connection with the fire at the Weodware Company’s premises, two of those ; buried were rescued alive and two were j dead. It appears when the first fall took place, one man, Wallace, a seafaring man. was buried up to the waist. A number 1 were engaged trying to rescue him 1 by prising up the things covering him 1 when the whole two floors above gave way, [ and pinned three more. One was A. i Miller, carter in the employ of the Com- > pany; the other was B. Esquilant, a young » man, who is son of a bookbinder in Dunedin; the fourth is unknown. It took | five hours’ hard work among great heat 5 aad smoke before the bodies were reI covered. Esquilanfc and Wallace were » alive, Miller and the other dead. Wallace 1 , died about 10.30. He was a Bailor on 1 i board the ship Wahnate, and was 27 years r of age. Esquilant died a few minutes i afterwards. r Drs. B own, Fexgusson, and Mclntyre i (Timaru) were on the scene for five hours 6 to render service in the dangerous posi- . tion. They administered chloroform to ) Esquilant and Wallace. The men and i doctors who were working to relieve them i did so at the peril of their lives, and the i way all worked was admirable. Th* fire is 5 still burning, and will do bo for days. The l iurniture warehouse is still standing, but > gutted.
