CANT EE BURY YACHT CLUB. The second heat for the salad bowl presented by Mr R. Saow came off in Lyttelton harbor on Saturday afternoon. The handicappers declared the following handicaps : Neva m ... Boratch Gowan >• Dream 20min Coquette 25mm All seemed satisfied as the four boats faced the starter and got away in the following orderGowan, Coquette, Dream and Nero. All quickly had spinskers out for the run down to the reef. The Neva overhauled the two smaller boats, but failed to gain on the Gowan, and the buoy between the reef and Quail Island was rounded by the Gowan, Nova, Dream and Coquette in the order named. As there was a good fresh N.E. wind blowing the Neva doused her gaff topsail, and this course was shortly afterwards followed by the Gowan. Beating down the Rip* Island buoy, the Gowaa, well handled and exhibiting better form than on any previous occasion, still maintained the lead, the Dretm and Coquette having fallen considerably to leeward, and shortly afterwards deemed it prudent to retire, and returned to their moorings. After this the race lay between the tiowan and Neva, bat the latter boat was never able to haul on her opponent, and the reef was run down to in the same order, and beating up to Ripa Island the second time it was evident that the Gowan, sailing as she was, must win the second heat. Standing in to the Eastern Breakwater the Neva must have strained herself, for those on board noticed an nnusual amount of water in the boat, and two handß were started to bail; but it was soon apparent that it was impossible to keep the water under, and it was wisely determined to put about, and a course was shaped for a small cove to the northward of the breakwater. Here she was beached, and none too soon, for if she had had ten lengths further to go she would have sunk. As the tide was falling she was left on the beach, and the ballast taken out, and everything made ready for launching at high water, when she was successfully towed off by the s.s. Canterbury, and taken in to her moorings. The Neva does not appear to be much damaged, and we hope her owners will soon have her in oommission again. As the Gowan has now wan the two heats, and it is impossible for another boat to make more points, she takes tire salad bowl.
