A»oth_*Stxi_^—TheLytteltonlnrapera yesterday struck work on board the Union Steamship Company's vessels now in Port. The alleged eaose is that the Company adhere to the original rate of wages paid here, viz.. Is 3d per hour, and 2s per hour overtime. It is said "that the three 'Shipping Companies have arranged to pay the.above rafew, and no more. In oonae"xp^eto?'ibf;th_ ; strike the emigrants who justTsmved by the Tong-riro have b^put-on to work the Tekapo and Te Anau, and seemed to be very well pleased to get a job so soon after arrival. In .the. afternoon the men belonging to the union employed by the New Zealand Shipping Company also struck. No delay will be caused to the Kaikoura, as the company have made the necessary arrangements to have her despatched at the proper date. A meeting of the Lumpers* Union was held last night, but the proceedings were privatx*. .. Gabrison Iltbbabt. —The subscribers to the Garrison Library met last nightrin the College Bifles Orderly Boom, the Presi- j dent, Colonel Lean, in the chair. There! were nineteen officers present, including Dra. Thomas and Britrin. The Chair-am formally opened the Library with' an inaugural address, in which he compared the militia forces of twenty years * age- and the Volunteer force of to-day, and added a consideration of the duties and value < f the several branches of the latter service. A hearty vote of thanks to Colonel Lean for his paper was moved by Captain Wolfe, seconded by Captain Martin, and unanimously carried. Major Slater was to have have read a paper on "Eeeonnoitring," but was indisposed, and had to defer it. A large number of books and periodicals for the Library have been ordered, and are expected in about three weeks' time. Htdbopathy.—A large building has recently been erected for Mr T. Sutherland in OtaM street, Kaiapoi, which is to be known as Matlock House, and is to be need asaprivatehydropathic establishment. The main building is 40ft by 40ft, and is two stories high, adjoining which are the capitally fitted up bath .and dressing rooms. The whole stands on five acres of land. The arrangements consist of hot, cold, Shower, vapour, hot air, and other baths, fitted up with the latest improvements. The treatment is to be the same' as that so successfully carried out by Mr J. Smedley, of Matlock, Derbyshire, England. Hokobata.—Our correspondent writes : —The Domain Board has been replanting part of the Domain, this being the third attempt to get trees to grow.'They have gone in for hardwood trees, being'unsuccessful with Pinus insignis and macrocarpas. It is a great pity they have not sufficient funds to extend the plantation to the Bakaia Boad Board offices, as it would greatly improve the appearance of the place. Ido not admire the "patent stiles " they have put up into the plantation ; they would not suit tight dresses or nurses with two or three babies. The Jockey Club is having the grand stand, saddling paddock, and rails re-painted, but not sky blue, as before, the saddling paddock and lawn top-dressed and sown down. The Hororata Brass Band is almost defunct, having had a rumpus with bandmaster, Mr Bowles. It is' an awful' pity such should have occurred, when it had almost got through the struggle, and was beginning to play j with wonderful credit. The School Committee is not troubled with many meetings,! having had only one since the night of election. I suppose there are no rows on the board, the school having passed 93 or 94 per cent, at last examination, and the fault-finding section of the community not now being represented on the Committee. The Church of England people are contemplating holding their annual tea meeting'next month, and the Fife and Drum Band, whose number has increased to twenty-nine members, is going to give an entertainment. Fancy Dbess Ball.—This ball, in connection with the City Guards Bifle Volunteers, is announced to take place in the Oddfellows' HaU on Wednesday evening next. So far, we learn the prospects of the gathering being a great success are excellent.
