Intelligence is to hand from the scene of the rebellion, Saskatchewan district, that the Canadian force under General Middleton, while advancing against the position held by the insurgents under Louis Biel, found a large party of Batouch Indians (allies of half-breeds) lying in ambush in a ravine. Severe fighting took place, with the result that several Indians were killed and fully fifty wounded. Middleton afterwards surrounded the ravine, in the hope of capturing Batouch, but a force of rebels came in relief to the latter, who were thus enabled to retire from their ambush.

The New Zealand Shipping Company are in receipt of cable advice from London, dated 23rd mat., which contradicts the report that the BJULS. Kaikoura is chartered by the Admiralty. The steamer will leave Lyttelton for London ou 10th May, carrying her Majesty's mails, as advertised.
