; The third annual meeting of the Canter- ';V bury Caledonian Society, waa held . «£♦-■'*'. I Warner's Hotel last evening, and largely j attended by members. Mc H. A. wa& ' ViCft-Preaident, occupied the chair. The Chairman eaid that before profof* ing the adoption of the balance-sheet, there were one or two matteis he wished to bring before the meeting. All regretted, as the Directors did, that a bad day made the annual gathering a failure. It was a big sum t» drop, and he thought,, that the time had come to consider whether it was advisable to spend bo much money on the annual gathering. The concert, cat the other band, was a great success, and was now looked forward to as one of the leading* entertainments in Canterbury. One other item in the report referred to piyment of members. Several members , Bad teen proposed, ballotted for and elected, but had never paid in their cub» ecriptions. This was to be regretted. Their names had been struck off t&fr Toll. 'They must have something far higher and nobler to aim at, and with alittle encouragement he thought they would be able to offer scholarshipj which would materially assist the children. attending our public schools. [Applause] The Committee proposed that two scholarships, should be made, of the annual valuft of JB2O, and tenable for two year* under certain restrictions. Mr Cakpbxli. said he thought some notice should be taken of the bravery of Mr Buckley, who saved a young man from drowning in the river Avon. Mr Buckley ought to receive the Society's medal. . The motion wae seconded by Mr Stbtjan BoBXBTeoN, and carried unanimously. A vote of thanks was accorded to the '-offijers of last year. : On the motion of Mr Fbabsb, seconded tyMrFisHEB, it was decided to hold a ball t asd the meeting was informed by, the Chaibkan (Mr Campbell, Mr Watt having retired) that the ball must be selfsupporting, as the Society could not promise any rands. The Committee appointed, with power to add, to look after the arrangements was Dr. Stewart, Messrs 8. Williams, J. Anderson, jun., J. Campbell, B. Struthers, G. McKay, Fisher, Wallace, Eoberteon, Watt and Eraser (convener). The movement for the establishment of a Scottish Volunteer Corps was mentioned, « asd the nwrifitanoe of the Society or its members solicited. A list was passed round, and many names attached to it as honorary members. A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the business.
